The main difference is the size of the rear tires/wheels,the eagle hitch is different because of the extra height. The parts books are online at CNH and show the differences here is the address:

A 312 is a High Clearance version of a 300 but I believe is actually a 350 with the smaller 300 motor. I'm thinking the 350 hadn't been released yet when the 312 was sold. Others can correct me as I may be wrong.

My 312 was different in that it had a fiberglass hood also. I don't think that was typical though. The top of the hood that opened was steel but the rest was fiberglass.

Anyone know anything about how many were built that way?

The 312 appears to be the forerunner of 350 and the others that followed. The 312 has the bigger axles and axle housings. On the 350 the clutch housing was changed for the different engine and they cleaned up the Eagle Hitch mounting points. I have a 312 and it has the fiberglas hood. Apparently there were not very many with the fiberglas hood parts. I only know of 3 at this point in time. Barry.
