3000 ford hydraulics

My 3000 on start up after sitting at least overnight will not raise the 3 pt hitch on the frist try with the lever( no weight on the arms).I can cycle the lever about 2 or 3 times and it will function the rest of the day.Fluid level is ok. I use napa hydraulic oil and have for years. This was my dads tractor brought in 1969,maybe. One of my buddies told me to clean the filter underneath the tractor located behind a cover. I see nothing but a plug. I know we have never changed the fluid, only add as needed.Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I hope that's a utf fluid and not plain hyd oil.

question.. if you raise the lift handle and leave it up for a bit will the lift work? or does it literally ned to be exercised a few times.

if the former, then probably has a suction leak and is repriming, if the latter, perhaps a sticky unloader valve..

post back.

Thanks for the reponses and yes I have to work the handle up and down to finally make it work. And yes it is utf I add. The unloader valve you guys are talking about, can I get to it by removing the top cover? I can do some work myself and do you guys think I would be better off to buy a shop repair manual?

I did not read everything before I posted, so the next few days I will remove the top cover and see what I can do. I cannot take the heat so it will have to cool down for me. but I will update as soon as I know.

Before I went through the effort of dealing with the unloading under the top cover or trying to access the filter I would check the pump for prime. When you first start it loosen the hex head plug on the side of the pump and see if you are getting bubbles out of it. Could be as simple as loose hyd line at the pump or under the right running board. Cost you nothing to perform that test.

check the prime as was mentioned.. but if you have to exercise the 3pt controll alot.. it's not lookiong good as a prime issue... still.. free to check aswas said..
