3000 Ford Power Steering

I know this topic has been discussed. Went through archives several pages and didn’t find. Ford 3000. I have power steering fluid leaking that is running down onto housing at bottom of steering column. As far as I know nothing has been replaced on the steering system. Haven’t taken covers off yet to check. Any ideas what I might be in store for. Thanks.

If its like my 3600, the seal is in the casting top cover at the base of the steering shaft shroud. To access, remove the steering wheel, the metal shroud around the steering column, 4 bolts holding the top casting to the main valve casting, look up inside that top casting and there it is. The biggest problem is "deciding to do it"!

That is always the most important question. Waiting on the board of directors to vote. Will it hurt to use it as long as it has some fluid or would you wait till repaired. Need to rake about 12 acres of hay. Have another tractor I could use if needed.

How fast is it leaking? If you only need to top off the reservoir with a few ounces after a couple of hours of working it, then go ahead and wait for the repair. If it leaks enough that you can't keep the reservoir topped off, then don't run it because running that pump when it is dry will damage the pump.

Its a easy job to do other than the cowl has to come off. I made a post with pix on this about 2 years ago but the archives are down.
