3000 HP question

I was looking at ford 3000's on the internet and there were 37 hp / 42 hp/ 47 hp and I looked on external_link they said 48 hp for a 3000. did they make different hp tractors? I looked up the serial # that was on the bell housing and it is a 1974. Is there any #'s that would tell exactly what is was when it was new?

There was an early and late series of 3000, with maybe 1 or 2 h.p. difference. Gas or diesel, and manual or Select-O-Speed transmission could also make a 1 or 2 h.p. difference. That said, I'd say the higher ratings are probably refering to engine h.p., measured at the flywheel, while most times PTO h.p. is used. A 3000 would be about 38 h.p. at hte PTO.

I should say later models like the 3600 were 42 hp. Plain old 3000 may have been 38...

And my 38 h.p. figure is from the early ('65 - mid '68) 3000's. I think that was for an 8-speed diesel.

There are several ways to rate hp..

engine brake hp.

pto hp

drawbar hp

In the early days due to fraud, some states required cerification and after that pto hp became the most commonly used and accepted hp to used.. its includes the loss of the generator, the water pump, the clutches and the pto shaft to measure the actual hp output to the shaft for the farmer to use.

drawbar hp is measured as actual pulling hp off the drawbar, but in real lift the weight of the tractor, the soil and other factors make this one hughly varible in each loction and day.

the engine hp is a calculation base on cubic inches and it therectical hp so its not very relavent.

so pto hp became the normal hp rating..

38 pto hp for a 3000 is about normal if you look at the official tests..
