3000 oil filter adapter

Changing my engine oil next, and also the filter. What do you think of the adapter kit for a spin on filter? Is it of any benefit over the current original style? Price for each filter is the same, albeit the adapter has the extra cost. Also, I m reading 10-30 oil is good for 32-90F temps. Southeast MI doesn t seem to get that cold anymore. Any opinions on either are much appreciated

Hi Steve

Converted my 5000 to the spin on filter adapter years ago. The spin on filters are easier to fit than the older style in the canister which I found difficult to centre and seal up the o ring hanging off the side of the block. Just must not have been holding my mouth the right way! The adaptor had a
square headed nut to locate it onto the block. Had to borrow a special socket from the dealership I purchased the adaptor from. Once the adaptor is on oil changes are simpler and cleaner. Let us know what you do. All the best Matt.

Thanks Matt, you make a great point about the process of installing the new canister filter. I have not experienced this yet, will be my first time, but as you outlined I can already imagine it might be problematic if not lined up just right.

Just put one on a 4110, the adapter was slightly larger in diameter than the radius on the side of the block, (didn't affect the sealing
surface) so I resized the adapter a little with my portable grinder, had no problem with the gasket sealing.

The ph8a spin on filter is around $4 at wally world. Thats pretty hard to beat. And easier to change and dont have seal problems like the canister. If your keeping the tractor, its a no brainer.

I bought my adapter new off ebay and it included the gasket mating to the block. Some of the offerings didn't show that O ring in
the ad....maybe there, just not advertised. The PH 8A and the Motorcraft FL-1A both fit the Fords, had 3 at one time and also fit my
5 liter Ford PU. I noticed the MC was much higher than the Fram recently but my store had the MC in stock and not the Fram.

I had difficulty with leaks after changing my canister style filter on my 4000. First was holding the gasket in place, and then keeping it from rotating as I
tightened the canister bolt. I balked a bit at the cost of the adapter plate, but the result of the conversion was no more leaks and I only had to stock one part
number spin-on filter for the 4000 and 5000.
I run 15W-40 diesel oil in my tractors year round and my temps range from 20's in winter to the occasional 100 during hay season.

If I was restoring the tractor and wanted to keep the canister filter, that should not be a problem. Simply use vaseline or grease to stick the seal onto the block before installing the canister.

For convenience, spin-on all the way. For originality, canister.

Thanks everyone for your experience. I ordered the adapter kit off the site here. Will update with some pics once it comes in.

Thanks for answering this. I ve read quite a bit about this oil being a good choice, typically in rotella T4 brand too

Might be a dumb question, but did any of you use thread sealer? The weather has been fantastic the last few days, and will be for the next couple, so the idea of doing this and waiting 72hrs for thread locker is not appealing… lol
