3000 pto not engaging while engine is running???

Ive got a ford 3000 diesel with the 8 speed. I just bought it and didnt know much about it yet but i cant get the pto lever to engage while the engine is running. I have to kill it, engage it and start it back up to make it work. It will disengage just fine while its running but it just grinds when i try to engage it while its running like my 4000. I have tried pressing the clutch, putting it in gear, leaving it out, low rpm, high rpm, nothing works except for killing the motor. Is this normal? Cranking it with the pto on and hooked to the mower just doesnt sound right.

Are you pushing the clutch ALL the way down before engaging the pto?
Have you tried adjusting the clutch linkage?
Which 4000? 4 cylinder or 3 cylinder?
You do know that the 3 cyl 4000 has independent pto so you do not have to touch the clutch to engage the pto. But the 3000 has Live pto (or transmission pto) both of which require you to push the clutch in to engage the pto.
If you know the difference and if you have adjusted the clutch linkage properly and if it still grinds then your pto disc is probably worn out and will require a split to repair.

do you have the clevis pin set into the correct hole on the clutch linkage for pto use??

there are two holes, one for no pto use and a lower, more compfortable clutch pedal.

Assuming that the free travel is correctly adjusted on the clutch... most likely the PTO disc is stuck/rusted to the pressure plates. A split is in her future.

When my pto disc went out someone had adjusted it to get the very last ounce of life out of it.
When I adjusted it so I could engage without grinding it just slipped. I had to do a split.

Thank you guys for all the replies. I have had several thousand series tractors but have never had any pto or clutch issues until now. I will check the linkage as soon as i get home, hopefully thats it. Thanks again for your help.
