300u split - question

When putting the two halves back together after a split, there was a way to make it easier by tightening the bolts thru the inspection plate after you got the two parts back together. The old computer had a sudden demise last winter and took my repair folder with it. I just spent over an hour searching archives for the post...can't find it. Would anyone mind telling me how to do this again? I think the original post was from janicholson. Sorry to ask.

I am not sure if it is a viable option on those tractors, it does look like they have a fairly good sized inspection cover for the clutch. I believe what you are talking about is to set the clutch pressure plate onto the constant driving splines that operates the live PTO. Then slide the lined clutch plate on the input shaft of the trans, of course making sure it is facing the correct way. Then you slide it together then install the bolts that attach the pressure plate to the flywheel through the inspection hole. This avoids the fight of not having the splines centered up perfectly when the pressure plate is installed prior to rolling it together. There may be a few other nuances, like having some small hardwood blocks to block the pressure plate part way released which would help when starting the pressure plate bolts into the flywheel. You have to be careful to capture them as they are released so you do not have them fall into the clutch workings and jam something up. Also using this method I would encourage you to draw the pressure plate bolts down evenly, that will require a little additional engine turning.

If you are referring to the clutch install as used red describes, yes that method works on the 300U. Starter hole gives good access also.

Definitely recommend if you have an independent PTO. If not, I think this method is likely more difficult than standard clutch disc alignment.

Just as described except, I have on trucks used longer bolts for alignment as I put them together or for starting them after together. Longer bolt has to be able to go through the bottom inspection hole as it rolls together.

I know nothing about splitting a 300 U. I have put plenty of transmissions in race cars, antique cars and pickups. I just have a set of bolts that will screw into the back of the block. I cut the heads off, grind them to somewhat of point and with a right-angle grinder with a cut off wheel in it, grind a slot in the end for a really big screwdriver to put them in and out with.
