I asked about this gauge last night. Here is what I found. This is the actual gauge. Rather than trial and error, can someone tell me the easiest way to the back of this gauge? I think it will need to come out to do the repair...would help to know the shortest route.

The other end of the cable was exactly where I was shown last night, but looks a bit different. Looks for all the world like a cardboard cylinder jammed into the hole where the cable should go and what is left of the cable stuck in the outside of it.

When I took the cylinder off the cable, you can see there was nothing there. Whatever was supposed to come out of that cable is gone and so is the hardware that kept it in the hole on the tractor. Said hole being about 3/4" with two threaded holes. Going to have to look around to see if the new cable comes with all the parts. Any comments/suggestions appreciated.

The Tach Head (dash) end of the cable is screwed onto the tach with a knurled nut similar but smaller then the one on the end in your pics. If you cannot get to it by main strength and awkwardness (my grandmas term for massive effort) The only other way is to take off the panel. Removing the tach requires removing the panel. It is held in place with a metal strap in the form of a inverted U. this pushes on the dash and pulls on the tach body with a nut on the same threads that the cable screws onto. With the cable removed, the tip of the tach sticks out and you can spin it with your fingers before taking it out to see it it works. If it works, the only thing you need is a cable core, #2 grease to lube the housing (what you have) and a gear for that tractors tach. Jim

Not to over state the obvious, but it looks to me like you pull the panel loose holding the oil. Temp. and amp gauges. Then possibly a slender hand could reach in to access the back of the tach. I would make sure you disconnect the battery first so as to not short out the amp gauge wires which will be hot all the time.

A speedometer cable is the same thing just need to get the ends on the gear or what have you on the bottom end and the top should be a square formed on the cable. Usually there is a knot like deal that goes on the top end on the cable itself.

If only it were that simple! LOL!

I was able to get under there but too tight to do much and I have to stand on my head to see what little I can do. :)

Dave,
It looks like someone installed a new tack or at least a rebuilt one on your 300 since it shows "zero" hours. What you are missing is the tack cable and most likely the gear in the distributor that drives it. Either the gear is missing or defective. I believe originally they came with nylon gear. Several years ago I ordered two gears from the Bates Company. I used both so I can't send you a picture of what the gear looks like. Maybe I can find an old one and take a picture of it. I think you can look them up on the CNH parts site but don't think Case-IH sells them anymore.

Attached are two pictures of how the cable should mount to the IH Distributor. First is the one on my 300 Utility and the 2nd one is one on my 350 that has both a new gear and new cable. I got the cable from my local IH dealer but that was a few years ago. Hope this helps. Al
