3010 JD diesel timing problem

Hey guys. I have a 3010 I bought a few months ago. It runs great but will not rev wide open. Lacks power. I was thinking to start with injection pump because it s been sitting. Original owner passed away and I purchased from his daughter. Anyway. I pulled cover off flywheel window. And cover on pump. The crazy thing is. When pump is on TDC. Engine TDC is at top of window on engine side. I can roll engine backwards and line up TDC on engine and pump stays aligned. Seems like a lot of slack in something. It might just be wore out and need rebuilt. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks in advance.

The cam gear is worn,,along with the oil pump gear..this is not uncommon on a tractor that is 60 years old,, I always replace them both when doing an engine over haul..

You should time pump by rotating engine the way it normally goes. perhaps it was timed turning engine the wrong way before. Timing is really critical

I don t think you re understanding what is being said. It has already been answered above.

Hello 3010 guy welcome to YT! Hayfarmer is just
suggesting that if the wear in the gears was unknown
to the person setting the timing the normal process
would be to turn the engine in the normal direction of
rotation. You would stop at the specified set point on
the flywheel and then line up the lines in the pump
window. Then a good practice would be to turn the
crank another two turns and stop it again at the timing
spec and double check the pump mark alignment. You
could advance the pump a couple of widths of the
marked lines in the pump to make up for some of the
wear and then see how it runs. The timing has nothing
to do with rpm the engine will achieve. That is
controlled by the set point of the stop on the injection
pump fuel lever and the governor in the pump. Unless
there is something stuck in the pump. I cannot
remember if the 10 series had the foot pedal throttles,
most of the 4020s I have been around will raise the
RPM slightly when the pedal is held all the way down. I
suppose you know the stop knob on the end of the
throttle pulls out to give you full engine RPM.

It sounds like the governor ring is
failing if it won't rev up. Loosen the
screws for the timing window to let fuel
run out with the engine running. If it
revs up then the pump needs to be rebuilt.

hello,, the 3010 does not time on TDC,, unless a 3020 engine has been installed.. 3010 inj. pump without speed advance times at 10 degrees BEFORE TDC.. 3010 pump with speed advance times 4
degrees BEFORE TDC..

All I know is. When pump is aligned with timing mark. Engine TDC is at the very top of the window. No numbers are visible on the engine window. TDC has already past when injection pump mark lines up. It starts and runs. I m just trying to get pump off to have rebuilt and was trying to clear some things up. I m guessing it s just due to the wear in oil pump gear. And cam gear. Tractor has never had any major work done. It was only used for bush hog work it s entire life. Drawbar is almost wore out

Im having my pump gone through. It sounds it was timed the same as yours. I wonder if someone made a mistake and timed it 4 degrees after.
What did you end up timing yours to when you reinstalled the pump?
