3010 Starting issue

Morning Forum…. I had an issue with my 3010 starting sometimes I would have to turn the ignition switch off and onto two or three times before it would engage…. The dash lights would come on and dim while the ignition switch was turned to the start position… finally the other day it stopped starting altogether when I turned the ignition key on and jumped. The two posts on the starter solenoid, started right up and ran…. So obviously the ignition Circuit is working…. So now I’m a bit bit confused, is it the solenoid acting up or is the ignition switch the culprit?…. Any thoughts from the electrical gurus?

Any chance that it's the park safety switch out of adjustment? Slam the shift all the way up in park while you hold the key to the start position and see what happens.

I agree with rrlund & suggest to remove cowling in front of instrument panel & check operation of neutral start switch located on RH side by gear shifter drum. Does your tractor have 12 or 24 volt electrical system? Yrs ago JD offered a kit that added a starter control relay that would provide more voltage to starter solenoid engagement circuit. One can easily make a kit with a $30 relay.

Tx Jim and rrlund…. It was in fact, the neutral safety switch ….many many thanks!
I had just purchased the tractor. It’s got 3600 original hours on it and the shop manual is on its way….. being an old Ford guy…. I had not even thought there was a neutral safety switch in that position…. Lord knows I should’ve thought of it…. In any event, the plate is quite a bit worn being as old as it is and I’m Going to repair it properly as soon as I get the last of this haying done!
Cheers!

If it's like mine was, you're going to become a master 3010 mechanic before you're through.
