Well I went and looked the 3010 that I had posted about, pto worked but the control handle was very sloppy as were ththe trans. shifter
,needs 1 rear tire,and some ditributor work seal at pto leaks.looks like it might make good parts tractor.or avery long progect
 
Run. Run fast. Run far, before you end up with $7500 in to a tractor that'll still only be worth $2000 like I did with the one I bought.
 
So what does it really need ? Are you wanting to make a barret Jackson all time high seller or a tractor to use ?
 
If you're thinking of using this, be aware that it'll burn quite a bit of fuel. People consider the D to be a fuel guzzler, but the 3010 gas is worse: at Nebraska it used 4.1 gallons an hour to make 37 HP, while the D used 3.968 gallons an hour to make 40 HP (three horsepower more from less fuel). The 3010 Diesel is about the same as the D for dollars per hour, since diesel price now is higher than gasoline and has been for quite awhile. I run the numbers quite often since we have one of each, and sometimes the D beats the 3010 and other times it doesn't, but they're almost always within 25¢ an hour at the 40 HP range.

Another thing, if you care: the 3010 and 4020 are the two worst tractors on the farm for being hard on the back. Neither my wife nor I can ride either for very long without having back problems for days.

My reading comprehension of Neb test 763 for a 3010 gasoline DBHP is 50.98 not 37. 184,879 new 4020's were sold so it's evident farmers didn't agree with you & your wife that they were rough riding

If you look at the original test, you'll see they tested fuel consumption at different loads. ("Varying Power and Fuel Consumption--Two Hours") This shows its economy across the tractor's range. It lets you figure the economy of different tractors doing the same job that takes the same horsepower. While making 37 HP, the 3010 used more fuel than the D did while making 40 HP. The 720 diesel used only 2.14 gallons to make 38 HP, while the 3010 used 4.113 gallons to make 37, the D used 3.968 to make 40 HP, the 4040 used 4.1 to make 41, and so on. As for riding comfort, I was just relaying our experience. Just because a lot of people bought them doesn't mean they're great. How many F-12s did Farmall sell with that ridiculous little coil spring under its seat on a post? Pretty sure more of those were sold than John Deere sold As, which gave a much better ride.
 
Hard on the back ? What a bunch of crap and I promise I spend more time on my 3020 and 4020 than you ever will maybe someone needs to show you how to adjust the seat spring ? They are as smooth as any tractor I’ve used in the field including a new one .

either . I’d imagine a 3020 or 4020 is hard on you with the
original seat cushion from 1965 and a broken spring in the
suspension
 
Oh and diesel is 1.80$ a gallon and regular gas is 2.25$ a gallon you’ve got to quit trying pass your new math on us as fact
 
The Nebraska tests were set in place as a scientific analysis on which to compare tractors--getting rid of rumor, mojo, personal preference and any other unscientific opinion, including the automatic belief that a 3010 is more economical than a D. The results of the tests are fact, and that is what I'm basing my economy statement on. According to the engineers' results, the 3010 gas used more fuel in its two hour run making 37 HP than the D did in its two hour run making 40 HP. Now considering they tested the D on kerosene, it would use even less gasoline, which gets more power per gallon (as indicated by every test they did with tractors tested on the two fuels).

Plowing is another subject. I will be plowing several fields in the spring with my D, and you cn be sure I'll report exactly how many dollars per acre it drank. I have already done that with our 4020, so we'll have an answer then. Whether or not you'll believe me any more than you believe the Nebraska Tests is another issue. (Respectful fun, here)

Seat is a matter of personal fit. I told how it doesn't fit my wife or me. I have no idea what your shape is, but I'd be willing to bet you're not shaped like my wife. (More respectful fun here!) One of the things I don't like about the 3010 and 4020 is they are awkward to operate standing, which I do a lot in the fields.
 
Dude, he's talking ABOUT A GAS 3010.

However, these are the fuel prices here in southern Michigan:

Gasoline: $1.90
Diesel: $2.40

Both fuels have the same amount of tax. My accountant handles that for me.
 
Nice that they fit you. My dad likes them too. I happen to fit the 4040 and the 80 a lot better than the 4020--and the 730 and the D better than the 3010. Not sure why that's a load of crap or even why you care.

I made similar comment few days ago that the Deere with closed center hydraulics needs to be turned down on the RPM or they will use fuel.

What is very bad from the Nebraska test is that they always run the midfle or little loads at full rpm, which is wrong, except if you are a bad driver, or on the road.

As a kid, I always ran the 4020 at 2700 rpm down the road. Now that I pay fuel, 1900 is good enough...
 
As amazing as that D is, I'm surprised you don't just get rid of that 4020 LOL. Drive that 4020 to much you might wind up in the ER needing back surgery. Be careful out there!

IMHO engine rpm's on JD closed center isn't the determining factor on hyd load but rather hyd functions that are operating & how long it takes for hyd pump to reach stand-by pressure & go out of stroke if it can attain stand-by pressure & go out of stroke. The more hyd functions that require hyd pressure then the more fuel engine will use.

Most engines I've operated the higher the rpm's the more fuel they required regardless if they were powering a hyd pump or not.

IIRC 2500 was the maximum recommended rpm for a 4020
 
Ha ha! Well, the farm's in my dads hands, not mine. I own the D but not the 4020. And you're right; I don't want back surgery, so I don't drive it. Good advice. Thank you.

I think the John Deere section on this forum should be divided into two categories: "Two Cylinders" and "Too Many Cylinders." That'd avoid a lot of the resentment towards the better, more economical, earlier tractors we inevitably get from you New Generation lovers. I mean, I don't blame you. If I had to run one of those buzzing things with bad seats all day, I'd resent those of us with better tractors too.

Interesting. Hadn't noticed that.

When we got the 4020 my 80-some-year-old grandfather would take it to the woods in fifth gear wide open. It was comical. He'd never run a power shift, so he'd slow down with the
gears instead of the throttle. Eventually he figured it out and got along with it all right.
 
I suppose if we are farming with a model d and 3020 and 4020 the farm isn’t our sole source of income . May as well use what we like
