3020 battery box question

Hello,

I'm in need of a left-hand battery box for the early (pre 123,xxx) 3020. I ordered one from this website, but the bracket on the new one is in (out) about 3/4 inch from the edge of the sheet metal battery box. This won't fit my tractor, and doesn't match the box that's on there now. On that one, the bracket is on the inner edge. The new box won't lock in and tilt up, due to a hydraulic line and (maybe, if the line weren't there) some frame parts.

Is the new box "right" (and my tractor wrong) or did I get a defect. The folks at YTMag called the factory, and can't really get a clear answer. All they can find out is that all of the boxes they have now are the same, and they all meet spec. They can't find out if the bracket is on the edge, or back 1/2 to 3/4 inch.

Could one of you look at your box and let me know what's going on? Thanks.

The part I ordered is:

Battery Box, LH - For Models: 2510, (3020 Row crophi-crop sn 050000 and up, standard 050000-067999), JD500A. (Part No: AR40208)

I replaced the battery box on my 2510 a couple years ago. I looked at some of the aftermarket boxes and the brackets for the boxes had to be bolted on and some of them you had to buy the brackets separatly. I ended up buying one from JD and it was better made and the brackets were welded on. It lined up just fine and was no problem. I don't know if they are the same now but they included battery hold downs and the price wasn't much more anyway. Just my opinion but I would return the box you got and get one from JD. I can measure mine if you like but i'm willing to bet your box is wrong.

I'd appreciate you eye-balling yours, if you don't mind. Problem is, it looked like it was going to fit, so I decided to paint it green before I got it all dirty installing it (dope). If the bracket is welded in the wrong place I can make a better case for them taking the green one back (maybe).

Looking at my new box, the bracket, which is parallel to the edge of the box, is welded about 1/2 inch from the right edge of the box. It partially covers two drainage holes near the center-line of the box. On my old (rusted out) box, the bracket is flush w/ the right edge, not blocking any part of the drainage holes. I can't imagine it's right, and the guy at ytm (who has been very helpful) is having trouble getting any info from the manufacturer. They claim that all of theirs are the same, and they are all "in spec", but can't tell him if it's flush w/ the edge or not.

Thanks for the help,

Bob

I would say their boxes are not in to good of "specs". I looked at both boxes on my 2510 and 4010. The inside of the box and the bracket is pretty much flush. The outside of the bracket measures about 3" to the edge of the box. Front and back is about 4 1/2" from the edges of the box. The drainage holes are not covered up. If it helps I can send you a pic. I'm bad with computers so I don't know how to post pics but if I have an email I can send them. I hope this helps.

Thanks much,

I did get the new one that I ordered from the JD dealer today, and it looks right (as you described, and as my rusted out box was). It also seems to be of heavier gauge metal, came with the tie-down bracket and was already green...

I didn't put it on yet, but it looks like it'll work. Even better, ytm has no problems with me returning the one I painted.

Thanks for your help,

Bob

Just a follow-up so that somebody searching this topic in the future knows how it all worked out.

The ytmag boxes are not correct, the bracket is welded in the wrong place. This is something that they can fix if/when they realize and admit that they're making them wrong. If they fix that, their box (as of now, $73 plus $9 shipping) would work fine. Their's comes primed gray, and w/ out a battery tie down bracket.

The one from JD seemed heavier, was made to spec, and slid in and latched up perfectly. It was already green, and had a tie-down clamp and hardware. It was $110 + tax.

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate this forum.
