3020 cracked block

got a 3020 with cracks between sleeves in two places. i think i saw this on one other engine and we put it together and it was fine but cant remember that far back. I think the headgasket will seal them but what do you guys think.

I think you're correct about the head gasket sealing it.

of course any kind of crack is bad but a top side crack may not be as bad as it seems, check the lower end close before going back together, 3020 engine blocks are hard to find...

look close at the block where the o-rings go. We just did one (gas) we had an outfit in Iowa weld it up. They did a great job,and reinforced the blocks week points as well. I was surprised how many cracks they found that we would have never seen. I don't have there name, but I can get it. The tractor turned out great, runs like a watch.

this is a narrow block too. even harder to find.

The head gasket seals on the liners not the block.Our 4020 is cracked top and bottom between all six cyclinders.We found this when we overhauled it twenty years ago. A mechanic told us to use a sealer made by locktite we purchesed it from a CaseIH dealer, I think it was called 505 or 515.It is designed to flex a little.We used plenty top and bottom and it has held together twenty years.Ten years ago because of a bad injecter we scored one piston so we tore it down and replaced one sleeve and piston sealed it up and it has been fine for ten years.

If it wasn"t leaking before teardown, it should be OK.

We had a 4020 block in the same shape. We took ours to Cornett Machine in Somerset KY. They can fix it.

Was that place in Iowa in Nevada, IA? Forget what it used to be called, but Arnold Motors bought it a few years ago. They seem to do good work. I've never heard anything bad about them.Jim

the head gasket has to seal on the block too or all the water jackets would leak. what did you do smear the sealant on bottom side of head gasket over the cracks and then bolt the head down? I am willing to try it

We put the sealant right on the crack between the liners.Just a small beed not huge glops, put head gasket on and finished overhaul.Mechanic said that if it lasts one day it will be good for twenty years.

so you put the sealant on the cracks then set head gasket on the sealant an bolted head down?
