3020 diesel

I have a 3020 diesel that will start but puts out white smoke and full throttle only raises the RPMs slightly. I changed the fuel filters, and it ran good for about 2 minutes then back to barely running. It's starving for fuel but I don't know why. Any ideas that would help me figure it out? It ran fine one day, the next day it ran for around a half hour then started this.

Attempt operating engine with a shop towel covering fuel tank neck IE possibly fuel tank isn't venting. Attempt operating with inj pump timing widow screws loosened & fuel leaking from window. If engine operates better check valve in fitting on IP that fuel return line attaches to is clogged. Disconnect line from tank at transfer pump & blow compressed air from pump end of line to fuel tank.

I did try running it without the cap because it sounds like opening a can of pop when you take the cap off. It didn't seem to make a difference, unless I didn't run it long enough with it off.

I don't know enough to know where the inj pump timing window is. I'll take a look.

Try loosening the rectangular timing window on the pump held on by two screws while it is running, just enough for a good trickle.

I loosened the timing window and it picked right up and ran good. I couldn't figure out which line was the return, to many choices. I assume the check valve would have to be replaced. I'll probably end up calling someone to fix it. Would blowing air back to the tank clear it or was that just another option?

Forget replacing that valve. The injection pump needs removed for service to repair the failing parts INSIDE the pump. DON'T try to patch it or you will risk putting the rods through the block, I've seen that happen in my fifty years and counting of injection pump repair.

AJB, if you use Search in the upper right corner and type in: injector pump governor ring, you will find that is a common repair on older rotary pumps. This question comes up every few weeks, lots of good info back in those archives.

I'll have someone come and work on it.
