3020 Hydraulic Fluid Screen Stuck

Team,

Can anyone advise the trick to removing the hydraulic fluid screen behind the plug in the side of the transmission? Is there a snap ring or something that holds it in? I'm trying to wiggle out with needle nose pliers, but it won't release. I just did the load control shaft, bushings, and seals, filter, etc. and I want to check and clean the screen before refill. Tips?

Thank you,
Scott

Spin slightly as you try to pull. it should come out of there it’s just stuck. You might end up with a new screen if it’s stuck bad enough

There is no retainer holding it in. Wiggle and yank harder. It'll come out. If it comes out broken, so be it. Install a new one.

Well I dug in deep and quickly realized it was going to be a demo removal. A nasty task as I suspect it has never been pulled. Once the cage end broke off I had better purchase using an o-ring puller point jammed into screen face. With a GREAT deal of twisting and yanking with a pair of vice grips on the o-ring puller she finally released. Screen was fairly clean but a bit of crap that I'll attempt to scrape out of bottom of housing before the new one goes in. I'd say one should always have a new screen on hand if you are planning a full hydraulic fluid R&R.

Unless you go to a salvage yard, your new one will be plastic, which is fine as the new tractors had plastic ones. Also best to check this while the load shaft is out, easier to wash junk out if needed. chris

Yup. Screen should have been pulled as soon as the oil was drained.

Well too late for me with regards to a 'wash out' option. I'd be curious to know if some use clean hydraulic fluid to wash this area down to the drain plug or perhaps a solvent. I used a magnet and manually cleaned out a few items, but generally mine wasn't too bad. As an update, I was still able to source an OE metal screen from my JD dealer. After a new filter, new pick up screen, and full fluid change, I was very pleased that my clutch performance was much smoother. Things were a bit jumpy before. I became custodian of this machine late in its life and I suspect it might not have had proper hydraulic service prior.

Is this a powershift tractor?
