3020 Hydraulic Issues

I have a John Deere 3020 diesel with a
PowerShift transmission. I recently added
a front loader to it as I hope to move and
feed round bales with it. Just used the
tractor a few days ago to cut some hay
with a haybine and have recently used the
loader boom to move some other equipment
around the farm. I am now having some
hydraulic issues.

First started the tractor to prepare to
tug a round baler, and could barely even
get the tractor out of the shed. Started
fine, seemed to idle fine. Put the tractor
in gear and just sat at first. Returned to
park position, and tried the gear again.
As I let off the clutch pedal tractor
didn't move, then started moving very
slowly and hesitantly before the gear
finally caught. I also have now steering
at all, left or right. My 3 point will
raise when the tractor first starts with a
bad vibration, goes back down very slowly,
and will not come back up. The brake
pedals also jump back up, nearly throwing
my foot off them when I try to depress
them. Front end loader will not operate at
all either. Reverse gears performed same
as forward gears.

Also, while using the front end loader a
few days ago, when I engaged the lever to
allow the remotes to operate the hoses
running to the front loader were
vibrating,jittering, and rattling around
really bad. Loader boom would go up
intermittently and very slow, but came
down really fast, and seemed to bounce as
it came down. I've previously added
hydraulic oil, and the level is where it
needs to be on the dip stick.

Prior to all this, the steering wheel
would max out all the way when turning to
the right, but the tires would slowly
catch up, and the PTO would not stop
turning even in the lock position.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I've looked over the John Deere forum
here, and other areas as well, have yet to
find the posts relating to these issues. I
have the manuals for my 3020, operator's,
technical service, and parts catalog, but
need some fresh ideas what to look at.

Thanks

How long since hyd filters were changed & trans oil suction screen checked/cleaned?? Screen is located behind round plug in photo below. Is hyd fluid level at the full mark on dipstick??? What type hyd valve controls frt end loader(SCV,ind or both)?

I'll venture to guess there are 100's even 1000's of threads on the internet about JD 3020/4020 tractors with frt end loaders with hyd problems.

As TxJim says, there are many many 3020/4020 hydraulic issues with a loader involved on this site and others. There are several capable posters that will guide you in troubleshooting. one thing does seem to be apparent....you indicate you are using the remotes to power or supply your loader valve. Get that changed and remove your lines from the remotes and run one to a ported hydraulic filter cover and the other needs to be T'ed off the supply line right in front of the brake pedals. Lots of postings on that procedure too.

I bought the front end loader used from another 3020. The only difference in mine and the tractor it came off is mine is wide front axle and the other was narrow. He hooked it into his rear remote valves and operated fine. I have it mounted on my tractor the same way. Hoses run from the valve on the loader to the rear remote hook ups. Hopefully, the pics below help give a more visual understanding.

In the process of checking the filters
now. Were changed about a year ago. The
oil is at the top line of the SAFE area
on the dipstick. I believe it uses both
types of valves. From your pic it looks
like the brake system is a bit different
than mine. I think I have located the plug
with the screen behind it, just haven't
gotten to check it yet. Hopefully, the
pics below will give a better
representation.

Maybe you could attach some links to the
hundreds/thousands of threads on these
issues. I've searched the entire John
Deere forum here, page by page,(apparently
no specific search option), and a couple
other places, no luck for 3020 and FEL,
yet. Still looking.

Thanks.

The front axle also looks like it has hydraulic oil all over it. At least it smells like hydraulic oil.

The screen cover plug has an arrow pointing to it in Tx Jim's picture. Should have a 1/2" square recess in it to turn it. Use a ratchet or flex bar in the recess to turn the plug. It likely won't start easily.

(quoted from post at 21:41:37 06/09/21) Couple more pics. The screen should be behind the plug circled, correct?

It appears from viewing your photos due to your 3020 brake valve location is a standard or orchard model & if oil is present has HFWD frt axle. Hyd line to supply hyd pressure to frt end loader valve would line in photo below. If frt axle requires any oil it would need to be hyd oil that meets J20C spec's.

Can you please post a full view photo of your tractor?

I believe it is a Standard model. The
front axle doesn't have any type of FWD
I'm aware of. I think the oil on the front
axle is leaking from some where above the
axle. Looking at the parts diagram, the
steering valve or pump maybe a
possibility. Also, mine has the wide axle
front end, not the pony wheels.(Pictures
below.)

Rowcrop with a wide front axle .
The internals of the SCV are likely worn , out of adjustment or deteriorated with time .
Is the SCV set for one hose operation as in used with some hoists , implements etc ?
Either way the SCV could be bypassing high pressure oil back to the sump .
For all around better operation of the loader, hydraulics and tractor . The loader should not be supplied from the SCV .
Either use a power behind plate . Or place a T in the high pressure line to supply the loader .
Then a T in the rockshaft
Return line or use a ported transmission filter cover fir the loader return oil .
The loader valves could have a relief valve flowing . If there is a relief valve , it is for an open hydraulic system . Fior use with a closed system the relief valve must be cranked down so tight it will never open .
One blown Oring in the loader valve could be causing most of the problems . A failed Oring in a closed Center plug will cause total havoc .
There should be zero oil flow in the loader return line while the engine is running and when the loader controls are no being operated .
The oil drip up front could be as simple as a 45 year old hydraulic hose rotted through . The the oil cooler supply/return line or the front pump seal seepage line could be rotten .

The screen lives right behind the hydraulic filters. Are you sure its still full of oil ? A new set of filters is cheap
