3020 repower

I have a old 3020 gas sitting here. 3020 gassers aren?t worth much the way they are obviously so looking around to do a swap to fill my boredom for the rest of this winter. I know this questions been asked several times-but just trying to clarify a few things here. I?ve read that a 404 will bolt into a 3020. Is this true or somebody?s dream? I have a 4040 Deere that?s got a fair share of engine work done to it but a junk powershift transmission. If a 404 will bolt in, will those frame rails and everything work on that 3020? I?m having my doubts but looking for somebody who might of encountered this. Thanks

Your frame rails, hood, hydraulic lines, maybe alternator harnesses, are all going to be too short by 2 cylinders.
The 4020 rails are required because you want to have 4 bolts and not 2 on the engine front.
If you can find a 4020 hood and frame rails, you should not be too far off. The smaller rad and side panels of the 3020 should make it line up.

If you donìt care about originallity, you can probably assemble the entire front of the 4040 on the 3020 rear end and make it a quicker swap.
At one point in your project, you will have both tractors split, so If you can, I would try to assemble them together just for the heck of it, and see how you can make your own tractor out of 2.

What would not be that great, is to assemble the 3020 gas engine on the 4040 powershift... You sure want to do the other way around!

The first thing you would need to do is have the flywheel center machined so it would fit the crankshaft all so there are 6 mounting bolts in that crank 2 that will need plugged next you would need two new 4020 frame rails. now you are stared at lots of work and expense to come. next the radiator is to small and the trany was not built for 85 to 100 hp. i would sell the engine Fore $3500.00 and part out what i had left of both tractors then you can put that money to some thing that work for you

Anything can be done but that's not worth the effort.
If the 4040 is a cab tractor it's worth more than the
junk tractor you would end up with on that swap.
Is the transmission repair too costly?

It would be an interesting project that unfortunately might become a money pit. A complete 4020 front half would be easier to bolt up than to try to stretch your 3020 front half. You might be able to find a 4020 with a bad PowerShift transmission and bolt the front half of that to the back half of your 3020.

You might be time and money ahead to sell your 3020 gas privately for around $3500 and buy a different tractor that fits your needs or trade it in on another tractor.

Less headaches and less expense to make a 2510 out of it with a four cylinder Dubuque engine . Belhousing and front motor mount re-work will be required .

Best to find 3020D motor. They are hard to find.I think Tim S. might have one.Shame to junk a 4040 because of trans problem I bought a nice 4840 that only had 6500 hours on it and ran great but cost too much to fix trans.

If you go with a 300 series motor,

There is a JD 2510 Hydraulic pump support mount on e ba y. That allows you to bolt on the hydraulic pump indeed, but also the hydraulic support has threaded holes to connect to the frame rails. Frame rails are made of regular angle Iron, so you can easily make your own, or cut / reweld them as required.

For the bellhousing, you need to find a 4030, 4040 European, 4050 American, engine rear plate. 2510 or 2520 rear plate will not work on 3020.
Simplest way to go for the flywheel is to adapt the 3020 one on the 300 series motor to reuse same clutch.

Like said, simplest way to have a 3020 diesel is to put a Deere 3020D in it.
Cheapest way to have a tractor you can do cores with short term is to assemble your 2 junk ones together.
Most reasonable long term is probably to sell the 3020 and either fix the 4040 transmission or get a used one (maybe a quad range, even if it can take times to changes all the linkages and you have to make sure you get ALL the parts required in the salvage yard quote)
Also, your 4040 PS transmission core has to be of some salvage value. You can reuse your diff, 3 point, final drives.

If you do the transmission rebuilt yourself and use used parts where applicable, (like if you have exploded the planetary carrier, which will be hard to believe at 4040 HP...), the powershift is not going to cost you a lot of money to fix. It will sure take a lot of time.

Depending on your location I would probably buy you out of the 3020 if the price was right... Repowering it with anything other than a original 3020 diesel is not going to improve the value much because it won't be "right".
