3020 starter question

I have a late 3020 that I will be rebuilding the starting system on. I will be replacing the 2 6volt batteries with 2 group 31 truck batteries an fabricating new battery boxes to fit new batteries, installing all new 4/0 battery cables from ground to starter, the starter will also be replaced as was damaged trying to start too many times with the weak batteries. So my question is should I get the gear reduction starter or stay with the standard starter with the added cranking amps of the larger batteries, cca on the group 31 would be at 950, would the gear reduction be any benefit in this situation? thanks in advance for any input.

I would get a Nippendenso from a 4440 if it was mine, whatever you get make sure the nose cone is steel/cast, no aluminum. Or you will be digging the broken nose cone out off the clutch housing.

I have the standard 3ET "middle of the road" 12V batteries rated at 475 CCA. So the two of them together would be 950 CCA (I guess??) equalling your proposed set up (assuming your set up is not 950 CCA x2). Nevertheless, I have an Iskra gear reduction starter which has worked good. This is an early 3020 changed over from 24V.

The two group 31 batteries will be connected in a parallel set up which will double the cranking amps. I agree on the cast nose cone. will the nippendenso from a 4440 be clocked right and will it fit?

950 CCA is a common group 31 rating so he will have 950 CCA x 2. Assuming two like batteries, hooked in parallel doubles the CCAs and keeps voltage the same. Hooked in series doubles the voltage not the CCA.

On a 3020 diesel you are sort of locked into which starter you can use as there is not enough clearance between the end of the starter and the two spin on fuel filters. If your tractor is a 72 or someone has changed it to the square glass style you have a little more room. I had one of those cheap gear reduction ones and it spun fast but one day it snapped the nose and ate the teeth off my ring gear. Tom

The factory starter with the factory battery starts my 69 4020 diesel just fine with a good set of batteries. The batteries you are using should start a 3020 with the factory starter no problem.

My 3020 starts hard with a factory starter but the gear reduction and 3et batteries and John Deere reman injectors it starts up easy now

You can move the fuel filters to the frame rail if it has the double fuel filter setup then you can put any starter on you want . I did that for awhile but that delco spun the motor so slow might as well used a hand crank . Put a new field stud in my aluminum gear reduction starter and went back to work
