3020 starters

Working on a 3020 gas tractor and would like to have a
stronger starter. I believe this was talked about before using
diesel starter parts. Can someone give me the pertinent
information. Thanks for any help.

The free online JD parts book lists the various starters . Is the 3020 an early model ir side console ?
A gas engine unlike a diesel only has to roll over. The diesel must have a high cranking rpm to develop enough heat to ignite the fuel . If the factory starter has no defects . Starting problems are usually due to low voltage at the coil while cranking . Without enough voltage to fire the plugs.
Too low of battery capacity , high resistance cables and high resistance connections comet to mind .
iirc the 3020 uses bypass starting . Is the coil 6V, wired to the proper polarity and is the bypass circuit functional ?

I found a place on line that sold me a Delco. MT 27 for my 4020 gas for just over $200. I also converted a MT 20 from A 318 Detroit for the same tractor, lasted 20 years before bad batteries smoked it. The Heavy duty MT 10 head and drive will fit most MT 20 series Deco?s. Rotation need to be correct.

According to 3020 parts catalog gasoline & LPG starters are identical IE same part numbers

Does anyone know if there is a company out there making a gear reduction starter for the 3020 gasers?

I know they do for the diesels but I could not find one for the gasers. I would love to put one on but from what I can tell no one makes one.

Yes they mount the same but they rotate different directions and also they have different number of teeth on the gears so they are NOT the same starter.

Most old farmers regularly change their teeth. Should be no problem to change the starter's teeth as well.
