Tractor started blowing dark black smoke and did not stop immediately when key was turned to the off position. Finally stop and now will not start.
Fuel injector?

Hello br.. welcome to YT! For one remember this when posting on a forum. You are there looking at the item in question, we only see what you write. Luckily the number sounded John Deere and sure enough my suspicion was confirmed with a littler searching. The JD parts catalog breaks the 3038E into 4 separate sections depending on serial number, it seems like knowing the MY (model year) number between 17 and 22 distinguishes which particular catalog applies to your machine. Of course knowing the entire serial number also works. Other than what the parts catalog shows me about your machine that is as far as my knowledge goes on it specifically. Do you know does it have a turbocharger? What you’re describing sounds like a failed oil seal in the turbocharger. Did the engine seem to rev higher than normal when this happened? What happens is a warmed up diesel engine will run on oil that is in the air stream coming in the engine. The turbo bearing is fed by pressures oil. When the seal fails oil can start being pushed into the air intake side and the engine will run on that oil. Just to be clear from what I see that engine has what is called a common rail fuel system. So a failing injector (singular) would only effect how one of the 3 cylinders acts or fires. The injector firing is controlled by electrical pulses from the engine computer. When you shut off the key the electrical power to the computer is shut off so the engine should stop. Does the starter still crank the engine over? Check the engine oil level, how much is in it? How long did it take for it to stop? I am stopping here, let’s see what kind of response you give my “guessing” diagnosis.

A malfunctioning fuel injector could be delivering too much fuel, causing black smoke. It’s worth checking if the injectors are clogged or stuck open.

I agree worth checking, but a stuck open injector is usually accompanied by a fuel knock when that cylinder fires. When the fuel is dumped the cylinder instead of misted it takes a higher compression to get the fuel to light off. When the pooled fuel does ignite it gives a knocking sound as the quantity of fuel ignites.

With an electric shut off for a common rail system could it not have a spec of dirt that holds the valve open just a hair so it could run on for a second like a gasser dieseling so to speak ? Other wise I'm with the turbo seals letting oil burn from the crankcase and if that is the case lucky it did shut off . IF you get it to start again have something to put over the intake to snuff it out if it goes wide open with no response to throttle or shut off. As it will be blowing a cloud you can't see through of gray to black smoke and will not stop till it comes apart or runs out of oil and then the engine will be shot also from burned out bearings and seized crank or broke rods. All of which are not good.
