The original subject was 301 diesel backfiring.
My tractor just started the barking as I was using it. At first I thought I had blown a rod. But as I looked at it while it was running the intake hose popped off the manifold. It seems as though one cylinder is not evacuating the exhaust. So as the intake opens the pressure has to go somewhere. This link has been extremely helpful.
