as far as I know there was not an update to the rods, only the rod bolts. This was done in the 70s, possibly even after they qu 310 from the factory.
 
the update was just the rod bolts 6-point heads are the bad one , 12 point where the updated bolts , but if your overhauling or even pulling off the rod caps most oliver guys will tell you to put new ones in , cheap insurance , also i believe the rods are the same in the 283 & 310 but dont hold me to that , to check bolts in a running engine pull the dip stick out and look down the hole you can see the rod bolt in there
