I don't know the year, but as they "improved" the machines they add a letter. That often took more than one year, typically several.

Fred, I have a 340 also. I'm 99.9% sure it's a 1979. I think your's is also. I think you go by the 9 in c 594562. The 340 was made in 79, 80 and 81, then they came out with the 340A. The 340A and 340B have a newer style front suspension. I replaced the front axle pivot pin and bushing recently and posted on this site (do a search for 340 on this site). My 340 has a front end loader, 3 point hitch and PTO, no backhoe. I'm curious, is your backhoe a 3 point hitch mount with it's own pump running off the PTO? Or is it mounted directly on the rear of tractor?

Know nothing about this machine except that it has had a pretty easy past life. So I bought it from a friend of a friend.
needs a battery, that is why i was asking about the positive ground issue as I think this one is .
Did get a new $137 dollar battery yesterday while in town.
hyd pump is on the front of tractor, my phone is 520-507-1348 and it appears to have pto under cover and places for 3 point arms to attach,
I hope the pictures help some, but I would like to talk to you to get more information about these.

All Fords 1965 and newer are negative ground, as well as all Diesels prior to that. The 340A is without question supposed to be negative ground.

Can you re-verify your Tractor Number and list your Unit Number.

Your Tractor Number or Serial Number C594562 –corresponds to a late year 1978, but the 340 model did not start until 1979, although your Unit number may show 1978, so this maybe incorrectly stamped. Either way it is a 1979 model.

I am not sure; do you have a loader with this unit? Is your backhoe a Ford hoe?

sold my loader (too big) michigan 75B.
Wanted something I could haul

I thought it should be a neg ground too, but it's hooked up positive right now.

although the charge light goes out when running,
I thought that would mess up the chargin system.
