350b machining brake drums

Does anyone know how much you can turn off the O.D. of the brake drums on a JD 350B before you run into problems. I need to take probibly about a 1/4" off the diameter.

I wouldn't remove anything..A quarter inch is way too much..If they're that bad , find some good used ones..Lots of equipment bone yards around..

I can't say I've ever seen it done, but . . . seems as long as you can still adjust the "size-adjuster" to make the band fit the machined drum, it cannot hurt. The brake-band has a 1/2" adjuster-nut on it (take a 3/4" wrench). You are supposed to tighten it until snug, and then back off half-a-turn for a used band. When snug, the band is tight around the drum. So, if you are still able to achieve that tighness before the adjuster runs out of threads, seems it would have to work.
The same basic principal takes place with a standard-size brake drum and a highly worn brake-band. Oversize worn band and standard size drum, should work the same as an undersize drum and standard sized band. Now, an undersized drum and a highly worn band?? You'll have to check and see.

Like John says, you might be in trouble with worn band and machined drum. My guess is you would be definitely be in trouble with machining as much as you are planning on. I just machined the drums in my 350 and put in new bands, and it worked fine, but I only took .050-.080 off. If you have to go more than that, I can get your brake bands relined with thicker material to compensate, but there is a limit to that as well.
