350U IH filter

New to me 350U IH that I need to know where the hydraulic fluid filter is and what oil should be run in the transmission. thank you, gregjo1948

The filter is within the big cast iron housing located beneath the seat. You must remove the top of the housing to access it. Most people will say you should run Hytran, but lots of people use whatever hydraulic fluid that they have available to them at a reasonable cost.

The filter is really just a round screen, that will get plugged and collapse. If the screen cannot be salvaged, they are very expensive to replace. Hopefully, you can just flush it with some diesel, let it dry and then reinstall it.

Greg, in addition to the good intel
ih560 gave you, and since you asked about
both transmission and hydraulic systems,
you need to consider:

* Does the tractor have a T/A, and is it
currently working? In such case I would
advise that you do a lot of reading on
this sub forum before choosing a
transmission fluid. The T/A on these used
a ramp and roller (sprag) arrangement
with a sun and planetary that could be
rendered inoperable by the use of regular
gear oil. Long story short, the regular
gear oil works too well, and the sprag
slips.

I have used tractor fluid in my 350u
transmission that met IH specs when I
wasn't in church, but please don't tell
my fellow parishioners. Hytran is the
safe, but spendy, bet if you have a
working t/a.

Likewise, I often transgress and put
regular hydraulic oil in my 350u/300u
HYDRAULIC systems ( Note- not in the
transmissions) because I run so much
equipment my hydraulic oil needs are
large.

The 350u/ 300u have a deservedly loyal
and passionate following, me and Elvis
among them. Welcome to the club.

Richard Nixon was also a big fan of the 300 Utility ;)

After all that info, I don't understand what oil to put in my trans.. I have a working torque amplifier and I thought I could use Tractor Supply 303 hydraulic fluid. Do you think this will be OK?
thank you, gregjo1948

The fluid that goes to the torque amplifier (and transmission/rear end) is separate from the hydraulic fluid located in the reservoir beneath the seat. You should be fine to use the 303 hydraulic fluid from TSC.
If you were to replace the fluid in the rear end/transmission area, many recommend that you use hy-tran for proper operation of the TA.

Move up to next grade of oil to put in transmission.

Several states ban 303 oil.

MDA Removes 303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluids From Sale, 303 Manufacturers Recall Product

Missouri retailers of tractor hydraulic fluid (303) have been notified by the Department that these products are misbranded because they fail to meet any current tractor manufacturer s specifications. The John Deere (JD) 303 designation is 57 years old and has been obsolete for 43 years. In addition, there are no specifications available for 303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluids and, as such, products making only "303" claims cannot be tested to assure compliance with any known specifications. This action is being taken to protect tractor owners from equipment damage.

Over the summer the Department sampled 14 different 303 fluids, many claiming to work in almost every tractor. All 14 of these 303 fluids failed to meet current specifications and were found to be underperforming to the point that damage was likely to result from use.

Companies have been given the opportunity to revise their claims on the container to clearly identify the appropriate use of the product therein. The Department is working with manufacturers, distributors and retailers to ensure a low cost product with accurate labeling is available in the State of Missouri.

In the end, this action was taken to protect you and every other tractor owner in Missouri from damage to equipment. We are continuing to work with companies to revise their product claims or provide a higher quality product that meets a verifiable OEM tractor specification.
Notice to retailers with 303 products

Please contact your oil supplier to return any mislabeled 303 products for full credit. If you experience a problem with your return, please contact Weights, Measures and Consumer Protection Division Director Ron Hayes at (573) 751-4316.

No. 303 is really a bad idea in either the hydraulic system, or the transmission. Hytran fluid or a labeled equivalent
(must be on the label, not the lips of the sales staff.) used in both. The hydraulics are not simple, they are a demand
driven complicated system. Jim
