3550 stuck in gear

I'm looking at a 3550 stuck in 4th/8th gear. Hi and low shifts and the regular shifter moves but it won't change gears. It's a pretty solid state maintained machine with a nice factory loader and over 5000hrs. Any ideas on the value? Thanks. Mike

Worn shifter levers. Pull the top cover and slide the the 4th gear shift rod back to neutral. then take the cover and shifter and look at the little ball on the end of the shift lever. If its worn down, clean it, weld it back to a ball and carefully reinstall the cover, taking care that all 3 shift rods are in nuetral, and the both shift levers align into the correct grooves.

also look at the springs in the holes at the rear of the trans where the cover bolts on. make sure the springs and little pins underneath them are free and in good shape as these help hold the shift rods in the correct position or detents.

there is a nuetral switch that also has a little ball that can fall to the bottom of the trannny but its easy to fish out and put back into the nuetral switch.

First time it will be hard, second and third time you will be an ace... test shifting all the gears before starting and then retest all gears to make sure when you put the cover back on, you got all three shift rods in place the the shift levers engaged correctly..including the high/low range lever and the neutral safty switch allow it to crank only when in nuetral.

it could also be something more serious, but this is usually the fix.

you can purchase a whole new cover and shifters if needed. also the shift lever has a pin or rivit in a small hole that fits into a groove on the cover, that keeps the shift lever from spinning sideways.. Ive see the little pin worn completly off. its not obvious, but pin or whats left of it, can be pulled out and replaced for almost nothing. you will have to remove the circlip and spring to pull the shift lever out of the cover to expose the little pin or rivit.
