384 international loader capacity

Hi there looking at picking up an international 384 with a Kelly loader. It’s not a deal breaker but was wondering if this would be capable of moving are 4x5 round bales or would it be too much for the tractor? Wouldn’t be it’s primary job we have a 585 for that was hoping to have a back up and extra tractor for moving round bales.

My brother had an IH 384 for 10 years with an IH 1550 loader on it and the loader would lift enough to pick the rear wheels off the ground and the rears were loaded with calcium. He handled 4x5 round bales (not silage bales) with it with a 3pt blade on the rear. He replaced it with a CIH 495 with Quick Attach 2250 loader but loader was too heavy for the 495 and he bought a CIH 3230 and we moved the 2250 loader on to it. Much better match, the 3230 is just a newer version of your 584.

Ok so sounds like it should be ok for some occasional use of moving bales then
The hydraulics on the loader seem strong it has no problem lifting the front of the tractor off the ground

Was his 384 a good tractor for him? everything iv read people seem to have good things to say

Hi folks I also have a 384 but I seem to be having trouble with the power steering and the hydraulics at times it will not pickup the bucket or steer. The book tells me there is two oil reserves one for transmission and one for steering and bucket lift I can only find one under the seat for transmission. Anybody know of a second reservoir?

Normally there is only one hydraulic reservoir and that is the one under the seat, open the filler plug behind the seat and look down in the hole the hydraulic should be an 1.5 to 2 inches below the bottom of the filler plug. There is also a suction filter on the hydraulic out of the reservoir in front of the seat.
The 384 is 40 plus years old and to be positive about the hydraulics, I would require to see a photo of the hydraulic connections from the loader hydraulic valve to the tractor hydraulic lines. Does it have the Power Steering cylinder on the left side tractor attached under the left foot rest?
See photo below, the blue arrow points to the suction filter.

Yes I have that same outlet I have been trying to find the filter so and yes my steering cylinder is on the left side.

Yes a very good tractor, I believe the only thing my brother replaced on it in the 10 years he had it was the Lucas alternator.
And at that time my Dad and brother were doing dairy and the 384 was used every day to feed corn silage out of a bunk silo.

What we used to do was we had a bank barn with a steep "Gang Way" as they called it in our area that led up to the barn floor on the second level, so we would park the tractor on the gang way with the front facing the barn and then loosen the hose clamps slide the rubber joiner pipe towards the front , gently rotate the curved pipe on the filter to clear the pipe from the front and pull the filter out of the hydraulic housing.
I have seen the IH Mechanic do one at the IH dealership by connecting a shop vac to the filler hole and let it run to create a vacuum and then remove the filter. I would recommend installing a new O-ring on the filter.
One more question does your 384 have two hydraulic lines going under the seat and into the top of the reservoir? This was common on the Industrial versions but not on the Ag versions.

I will have to check tomorrow morning I will get back on tomorrow thank you for your help. I also have a good steep ramp I can use great idea.

Hello again mine has no hoses going into the top of the reservoir it has the one coming out of the filter area and one coming out of the front valve housing like the picture you sent only difference is that hose goes forward not towards the back of the tractor.

That is good, in the photo that I had attached, the owner had too long of hose going to loader control valve, he/she just looped it around under the right foot rest and up to front of hydraulic reservoir, that is the high pressure line for the 3PT.
