4.236 Perkins engine

I have a Perkins 4.236 diesel engine on my
New Holland 1495 haybine and it uses oil.
Run it four hours and it is a little over a
quart low. It only smokes blue smoke when
you first start it for a couple minutes
then no more smoke. No blow by at the
breather in the valve cover but some oil
comes out the dip stick like the pressure
comes out there instead of the breather on
the valve cover. What do y'all think rings
or the valve guide seals? Engine starts
good and has good power just wondering
where the oil is going. What model MF
tractor used this engine? Thanks

As said, check and make sure the vent tube is not plugged. Engine is used in MF 175, 180, LATE 255, 265, AC 175 tractors. SOME Perkins engines suffer from severe OIL ring wear over time and compression rings are still good so engine will start/run fine, just use oil. That happened to my MF 1105 years ago with the 6.354 which is similar to the 4.236.

The engine was used in all Allis Diesel 170 tractors, but not all 175s. Later ones used the 248 engine.

No the thermostat is still in it. It smokes bad when I first run it looks like it could be the valve guides leaking oil. Is that common on these engines

Think it would be a good idea to just put rings in it and not do a major overhaul

If I were going to go one step at a time (and I usually do) I would do the head first. You get a fresh head and a look into the bores without too much effort or expense. I have had oil getting into the cylinders by running down the valve stem (due to valve stem seals that had either turned to hard plastic, or disappeared after 40 or 50 years).

However, I could see the occasional puff of smoke when a drop of oil dripped into a cylinder so your symptoms are different.

In my experience the 236, 248, 354 engine family are due for, at a minimum, some head work by 5, 6, 7000 hrs. And just about everything that we have taken apart from that era has had many of the rubber parts severely deteriorated.

Have fun,
JP.

P.S.: Coke on you, we posted at the same time. JP.

That may be what it is cause it sat up for
a while and maybe the seals got dry and
leaking it has about 1700 hours on it. When
it is first started it does smoke bad like
the valves maybe leaking some oil into the
cylinder and maybe why the oil comes out
the dip stick just a little but nothing out
the blow by tube out the valve cover which
I checked and it isn't stopped up
