4 wheel drive on 155D

Hi again, I did take my 4x4 front driveshaft off, it does engage with tranny, I then took the next shaft out where front of driveshaft bolts to, it is fine, what is my best course of action from here? Take center differential apart or go to the ends where wheels attach?
Thanks again! <E>:?</E>

During your troubleshooting, be aware that only one side, (the side that turns easiest) of a differential unit drives at any one time. that would be the broken side, so, no go.

Aaron, I have no front wheel driving on my 4 x 4. The driveshaft does engage to tranny. I took diveshaft off, now where the drivesaft attaches to front differential, it spins freely. Also, I can hold it and spin both wheels. It almost seems that the crown gear is not turning.

Thanks Norm, I thought it was more primitive and would drive both wheels in a posi type manner! That will likely keep me from scratchin my nnalert for 3 extra hours, lol

If I hold both wheels, should the first shaft (where driveshaft bolts too) be engaged somewhat?

I can't answer that. Maybe Aaron or Dairyman can. Unless you have a broken ring/pinion, where neither side turns, it's going to try to turn the easiest, (broken), side. Try spinning each wheel and see which side seems to be carrying the most weight. The easiest spinning side will have something broken before the differential, (again, unless ring/pinion). Welcome to "troubleshooting 101". In the rear end you can determine with the diff. lock.

Try pulling the fill plug and have someone watch to see if the shaft turns. This will it least tell you if the one side is turning! <E></E>

If the input shaft turns but the tires don't then you will have to take it apart &amp; find the problem. The gears inside may even be missing. I have talked to a lot of customers that have bought tractors with missing 4wd internals because the seller did not want to fix it.

Good tip, Dairyman, I forgot you can see the shaft turning through the fill hole. If neither turns, something broke inside the pumpkin.

Awesome!!!!! that site explains it to me, I wish that was how I was taught in school, I can understand moving pictures a lot easier than books and a miserable old teacher, lol. I am working on it again tomorrow, but I have a feeling the input shaft is not even turning the crown gear, is it possible an inch of the gears on the end of the input shaft could break off?

What I mean is... can the PINION gear on the end of the pinion shaft be broken and not even be turning the ring gear? Wow I am knowledgable now!!

Yes, almost anything is possible. Especially on a tractor that you just bought with little or no history. The ring gear may not even <I><s></s>be<e></e></I> there. <E>:D</E>
