40-S shifter

I have a 40-S . 1953 model with the crooked shifter. I sometines have trouble shifting it because of some wear on the shihter. My question is can I cut the crook out of the shifter and make it strait? I tend to shift with my left hand and the crook makes this difficult, but I"d rather have my right hand for the lift and shift with my left. I"ve seen people use a shifter tower from an early 420, but havn"t found one so thought I could shorten and straiten the origional lever, Will iot work? Thanks, Nat

Nate, I own a 1953 JD model 40T, that I had the same problem, only when I purchase the tractor it had a straight shift lever, and it was
difficult to get the lever to shift the gears, so I purchase another shifter, one that had the slant lever,and it works fine in my 40. I think there was a service bulletin advising the change from the straight to the slant shift. If you are looking for a straight shift, I have one that you could have for $ 50.00, plus shipping.
