400 backhoe engine swap

Will an engine from a 2440 interchange with a 202 in a 400 backhoe? Both diesel 4 cyl.

What engine choices are there for swapping?

It would be wise to include the brand you are asking about to keep things clear as more than John Deere used the 400 model name.

In your case I am guessing you are asking about a John Deere 400 industrial tractor loader backhoe having the 4 cylinder 202 cu.in. diesel engine. I believe the 4-cylinder 219 diesel engine used in the 2440 will fit, as the 219 replaced the 202. You may have to do some swapping of parts, like the crank pulley to run the hydraulic pump drive, to get the accessories on yours changed over. That will take some research. You can use the John Deere online parts catalogs to study both tractors.

According to JD parts the flywheel housing is same part #(R63434) for 2440 & 400 ind tractor. Any JD 4 cylinder engine from the Dubuque, Mannheim or Saran factories should fit with minor changes.

Thanks everyone. Sorry about not putting John Deere in there. That helps me out.

looking at the John Deere manual it calls out (staking) the balancer bushings on the 4.202 engine. Is this still a common practice? I can not find the tool - JD255-1 Impress bar that John Deere mentions.

Thanks
