Haven't run my 400 in a few months so I fired it up the other day . When it started it made a short funny noise like a dry bearing . Zing and that was it nothing else and ran fine . Anybody have this ?

It the safety valve in the hydraulics. Those systems have a sort of unusual design, a metered amount of fluid flows through a small orifice which allows the pump to operate open center essentially letting the fluid flow in a loop as any open center system would. When a hydraulic load or restriction comes against the flow out of the pump the pressure raises and the flow over comes the small orifice. The spool it mounts in then moves against spring pressure and puts the system on demand sending full flow and pressure to the activated remote. Once the hydraulic remote or fast hitch spool is centered the safety valve returns to the "off-demand" position. When you hear that noise the thicker cold fluid causes the system to be "fooled" onto demand, once the regulator sees no demand it resets. The tube with the orifice is #10 in the attached link. Messicks Farmall 400 Hydraulic diagram It sets on the front of the hydraulic unit in front of the dash and behind the fuel tank. I may have already posted a link like this and told you. That link will allow you to look at all the parts diagrams for your tractor by choosing different Categories and Diagrams.

It's not that it's more in the dash area now that you said that . I'll pay more attention to it next time I start it .

Nothing to worry about them ? Sounded like a spun bearing on a shaft .
I will add this disclaimer, it will likely do it again. Next time you start it lean out to the right on the seat. If it has short hoses between the hydraulic pump in front of the distributor and the steel tubes see if they jump around when this happens. The hoses may have only been on the x50 series. Pull a hydraulic lever and momentarily dead head the system and see if the noise you hear then is similar. Your remotes will need plugged where you removed the fast hitch cylinder if you do this. Or if you have 2 or 3 hydraulic levers the inner ones go to the remote outlets under the gas tank. They would need couplers or plugs on them.
Does the freeze damage on the rear end casting still need repaired?

mine does that pretty much every time i start it. its in the hydraulics.
