4000 HD ind steering hyd help

I"m finally tearing into my 64 HD backhoe.I got the front hyd pump out last night and it looks like an oddball.Key on the drive shaft and about 6 bolts mounting it. I hope surpluscenter has something that will work.
The powersteering pump leaks around the shaft and has lots of thrust play. Is there any rebuilding option? I read something about a chaper car pump replacement?
It"s a diesel and the budget is tight. Thanks in advance.

I just pulled the power steering pump. All the leakage seems to be around the shaft. Like I said, it has lots of thrust play but almost zero radial play on the shaft. I pulled the seal out and it has a part number so i'm going to try replacing that first.Also The reservoir cap has been welded sealed on the top.It looks like it should be vented?

You can match up bearings and seals on the pump. A pump from a '64 mustang will also fit. You need to cross over the reservour. You will also need to swap the pressure relief valve from the original.

The top cap is vented. You should either clean the filter with solvent or replace. It's different from the standard tractor

The front pump is an older style. You will need to order it from a hydraulic house. One of mine has a Permco pump that is (I'm pretty sure) a replacement.

The permco numbers on the pump body are:

P3000C494AD 15 29

My research has shown that,

"C" = special drive shaft

494 = counter clockwise rotation

AD 15 = 1 1/2" gear


On the output side are numbers:
EA-0574-3

On the bottom:
WZ 0592

Input side:
QZ0577-15

John your pump is showing 21.5 GPM @1800rpm. Is that about right for a backhoe/loader. I was thinking original was closer to 30GPM?

Original was 17.5 gpm at 1800 rpm

Not much luck on a hyd pump. John the Permco pump you have is special with the 6 bolt flange. I haven't located one yet but I assume the price will be high if it's that rare. I found a few 250.00 pumps that will need everything modified/adapted except the inlet side is usable. My driveshaft won't even work. It's .805 dia. not .875 like anything else on earth.Anybody seen a source for the driveshaft yokes? I've got a lathe and a mill but i'd rather buy parts that work than spend weekends modifying everything.

On the P/S pump I would not let the in/out movement of the shaft bother me as long as the shaft has no side play.,,, yer tractor will accept most any P/S pump you can hang on it ,,, mine has a Nissan pump,,, works great...

You could take the plate out that the pump bolts to and modify that or make a duplicate that accepts a 2 bolt cheap pump. Then buy different hoses to connect to the pump input and output.

Or just call a hydraulic shop up and see what the price of a 6 bolt is...

I'm guessing it's in the 500 range.
