4000 hd steering filter

Anybody have a p/n for the power steering filter on a 64 4000 hd ind 4 cylinder.I'm trying to avoid my local NH dealer.
Also, is it bad to give her a small shot of ether when it's cold out. My intake heater plugs are shot and it lights right up with a little start fluid.Starts easy when it's nice out.
Thanks,
Mike

why not fix it vs trying to stretch the head bolts.

you don't want the engine to get adicted to ether.

have you ever seen the pistons that come out of ether adicted engines.. rings lands blow off.. etc..

proper incedental use of ether can be ok.. unfortunately.. I've only seen 1 out of 20 people use either correctly...

yes.. some will point out that some machines come with ether system installe donthem from the factory.. those usually give metered doses that are more or less idiot proof.. etc.. not the same as a guy hosing down the intake with a can of start fluid.

i agree with sounsguy, fix the glow plugs, and forget the either, those engines were prone enough to blow on their own they don't need any more reason. as for you ps filter go to local parts store and have them look it up wix, fram and others make it as well. I will take a couple of pics to post of a piston with the ring glands blown clean off. The owner didn't use the thermalstart and just either. We had just rebuilt the darn thing 300 hrs ago for the same dang problem. I guess he loves spending a lot on these tractors. TW's aren't cheap to go through.

Ether damage to a 172 Ford diesel...

Short answer - Don't.

why did the piston crack below the wrist pin?? I'm not sure I can buy into the ether doing that. I suspect a lot more was going on.

A guy got ran over by a bus.. the lady in the house ran out and gave him a aspirn for pain, but he died.

Moral of story.. aspirn will kill you. never take aspirn.

I suspect it was a hydro lock or long term stress???? bell shaped sleeves? bad injection pattern, dribbling injector?? water injection?? early ignition timing?? Foreign object damage?? Was the rod bent or damaged? ether does not have the near the btus that diesel has, so I'm wondering what really did this. worn out tractors that require diesel usually have other problems that are more likely suspects.

Well the guy I bought the tractor from said he squirted "a ton" of ether to get it started before the mud it was stuck in froze and it made a big BANG! and ran like dog droppings after that.

Ether doesn't do it's evil from great amounts of energy. It does it's damage by combusting very early in the rotation of the crank and it propagates the combustion front about 50x (from memory) faster and much hotter than normal. That causes a huge pressure spike in the combustion chamber [i:6d7dc1bbf3]while the piston is still raising[/i:6d7dc1bbf3]. That very hot fast moving flame front is present when the injector sprays, igniting that fuel (and any previously sprayed fuel on the walls or piston). That also raises the pressure [i:6d7dc1bbf3]while the piston is still raising[/i:6d7dc1bbf3]. That double whammy causes a pushing contest between the rotational energy of the 80# crank + 100# flywheel + the other cylinders that are combusting normally pushing up as the too early combustion is pushing the piston down. The ring lands typically fail in that contest -- but rods can bend and cranks can be damaged too. Blocks can even be damaged!

In the case of the pictured piston, I believe that the ring lands were blown off releasing the extremely high pressures. Then debris wedged between the piston and cylinder walls as the piston reversed direction, momentarily stopping the piston. The crank continued down, pulling hard enough to crack the piston at the pin mount before it was pulled free. The damage to the cylinder wall supports this opinion -- but I don't have pictures of it to share.

Your other thoughts don't hold up when you carefully consider the direction of forces involved. (except for early ignition timing - but diesels don't have "ignition timing" they have injection timing.)

I'm not a big fan of using ether. I do use it when necessary, but sparingly. The smallest, tiniest burst you can get from the can directed in the general direction of the intake while cranking is best. You can always give it a bit more if it doesn't start right off... that's easier and cheaper than buying pistons.
I do very much believe that john's pictures show ether damage as well.
A friend was rooting through his junk pile one day and came across a set of 4 rods from a 165 Massey.... ALL bent just below the wrist pin. I think the pistons were still attached to some, ring lands also blown off. He never, never ever, EVER puts ether into a little Perkins. That stack of rods is why...
Can't help you on the fliter other than the suggestions already made or a Cummins dealer. FleetGuard should have a cross IF you have the NH part number for the filter. Might be cheaper if they have it. If not they'll want to sell you a case.
Napa might be a better bet as it's probably the same as an automotive filter.

The operator's manual will tell you to use the glow plugs down to I think 25F, I don't have a manual in front of me. It may be down to 15F and use ether in that engine below that temperature.

The guys that tell you not to use ether in this engine cannot be correct since the owner's manual prescribes its use. It won't take more than a sniff to make that little engine perk as you well know. The trick is not to get carried away with it.

Scary stories guys...here's a testament to how tough the Ford is. I read a post on here about bleeding the fuel system after a filter change or other repairs. Somebody said they run the engine on ether until it bleeds itself.Nobody busted the concept so pumped nearly half a can in my tractor before I gave up and bled the injectors.I just gave it little shots to keep it at idle and it sounded normal except no smoke.I've got 5 hrs on it since and it smokes a lot but seems healthy.I can imagine some idiot fogging a can of ether into a slow cranking or otherwise sick engine and causing some major damage if a cylinder loaded up. I've got one good heater plug, I guess i'll buy another and rig up a switch and wiring. Thanks Guys.

your glow plugs are fired by a solenoid on the right side of thesteering column on the dash lower panel. with a push button to operate. Ether is a lazy mans juice. yeah you can run one on ether alone but even though you think it is not doing it any harm it is, not only to the piston glands, but also to the wrist pins and bushings and lower end and bearings too. Leave the ether on the parts store shelf. We don't even sell it at our shop. but it does make shops alot of money :)

sotxbill, the crack below the wrist pin is caused by excess ether believe it or not. with the valve off set to one side of the cyl the piston will torque when firing and put enough pressure on the skirt to crack it. THey are not the best built pistons, I have one in the shop right now, three pistons skirts completely broke off one side, the bores are as square and true as new ones, the inj pump was weak, so they ethered it to start it for quite a while, he is now opting for a gas engine to replace the money pit of a 172 diesel.

to start our 3000 diesel when i was a kid, dad used to take the rubber air intake pipe off where it goes into the manifold and using a lighted rag on a piece of wire, he'd shove the lit rag into the manifold while i keyed the starter, the old girl started pretty quick then, hardest job was taking the rubber pipe on and off.

I couldn't get any auto parts store to cross reference a steering filter so I used the ebay link and bought the AE33538A equivalent filter. Not surprising it doesn't work on pump. I assume the HD is an oddball. I guess i'll take the 28.00 raping by my NH dealer and get something that fits.
