I know a guy that has a 1969 4000 J D, and have been told that the rear end assembly is a left oover from the 4010 because it doesn"t have a diff lock. Others have said the rear end is from a 3020, Does any one know what it is or was it built special for the 4000? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Pete

Diff locks were an option on 3020/4020's, not available on 3010/4010's..there is a lot of confusion about what was and was not used in the 4000's...

This has been hashed over many times. I have late 4000 with diff lock. Think it was an option as well. 4000 was side console only, 69-72. If it is cheap buy it, differences are not substantial. Main one is 3 1/8 axle vs 3 3/8 on 4020.

A 4000 rear end is effectively the same as a 4010 in that the axels are the same diameter ect. However, a 4000 is not made up of "left over" parts from 4010's and 4020's. The 4000 was its own animal created to meet a price point in the tractor market. Differential lock was an option on the 4000 just as it was mid series 3020's and 4020's.

4000s could be ordered with about every option.I have seen them with 3 scvs,HFWA,factory cabs,1000 PTOs, and diff locks. The 3/1/8 axles were on all and there are some differences in the rear end and PTO from 4010/3020 .Some had single lights on the inside of fender and some outside. There are even some that were ordered with standard options and my info only shows row crops.

NOT Really, The 4000 is the same tractor rear end as a late 4020 only with its own unique final drives with smaller diameter shafts. Some parts in final drives are the same as used in the late 4020. The 4000 did not have the synchronizer on reverse like a 4020 did but the rest of transmission is the same. Both tractor share the same parts book and most internal parts. Not hard to see common part numbers. The big differences is the lack of sheet metal covers that the 4020 had.

As previously stated parts key #2 & #22 followed by the "A" in parts description will ""only fit a 4000 and nothing else"".

If anyone has a gas powershift 4000 with HFWA reasonable call me.Low Pros with power shift or syngros are also very rare. The 72 P.S. that brought around 35K made several people take a little more interest in 4000s.I have had an equal 4000 and a 4020 sitting next to each other and most times buyers prefer 4020 just because they used to have one. There were over 185000 4020s and 8095 4000s made.

Figured you would know this. Had a JD mechanic tell me a diff lock weakens the differential. Is this true? And how many 4000 diesel PWR shifts were built?

I've never witnessed or heard of diff failures due to diff lock. I briefly researched the parts catalog and the ring gear/pinion & outer brgs are identical with or without diff lock.

TIMAR 403 4000 diesels were equipted with powershift and only 9 gases.I dont know why it would weaken differential.I know the diff lock can make several hundred dollars difference in resale and some wont buy without.I think I read they were around $200 but would be cost prohibitive to add later due to labor involved. The IH diff lock is a non issue as they werent the greatest.
