4000 Starter

Am working on a 4000 3 cylinder gas for a friend. It won't crank. On the starter solenoid, there are 4 posts. The 2 big cables, one comes form the battery positive post and the other goes to the starter. On the 2 smaller wires, 1 is energized when the key is turned to the crank position, what is the other small wire for? TIA

The 4 post solenoid is an automotive type replacement. The second small post is to provide full battery voltage to the coil while you are cranking the engine.
If you put a volt meter on it you should see battery voltage Only while the solenoid/starter is engaged.

usually the little post are marked S and I starter and ignition. the I terminal is used to bypass the ignition resister that reduces the coil voltage from 12 volts to 6 volts To check the solenoid you should have battery voltage at the big terminal coming from the battery when you apply battery voltage to the S terminal you should get battery voltage to the other big terminal and to the starter. You should hear it click in If you are getting power all the way to the starter and it is not cranking the engin over you have a starter issue unless the engin is locked up and the starter can not turn it
