4000 verses 4020

What were the major differences between the tractors. I know the 4000 was called a "runner" in that it could pull smaller implements at speeds to duplicate the work of the 4020. Options and features, what was left off of the "economy" 4000. I don't think the synchro meshed from forward gears to reverse.

What else?
Is it as good as a 4020, less the the options?

The 4000s only had 540 P.T.O.,no rock shaft covers.single head lights, different wheel castings, basically a rear end out of a 3020,3pt hitch was lighter, tach is different,I beleive about 800# lighter and about $800 dollars cheaper. The syngro was slightly different. They are in demand due to their low production numbers[7796 diesels and 299 gases .The power shifts [403 diesels and 9 gases]are really hard to buy.I saw a powershift diesel with HFWA that had to be one of very few. They were pretty much trouble free and a 1000 RPM shaft will fit right in.There resale is the same as a 4020 as the lighter rear end was not an issue.

I like your post about the 4000 / 4020. I did not know you could put a 1000 PTO shaft in it. So if one had both(any 20 series) you could take the stored 1000 pto out of a 4020 which was stored above and on the left side of the pto and put it in the 4000 and then put that one back in the hole from the 4020 so the oil would not come out.

I must of change my 4020 thousands of times when I was farming.

Yes you could Im not sure powershift has the same shaft as a syncro but for from 1 powershift to another powershift and from syncro to syncro. The 4000 did not have the same rearend as a 3020 or a 4020. The planetaries and axels were only used on 4000s There are some of those parts that are no longer availible but they can be changed to 4020 parts. They had steel three point arms like 3020 not cast.

(quoted from post at 21:33:50 12/16/10) Yes you could Im not sure powershift has the same shaft as a syncro but for from 1 powershift to another powershift and from syncro to syncro.

540 & 1000 pto stub shafts are the same for PS or syncro-range trans.

Larry,
The 4000 had no 3020 rear end what so ever. This is often said and never true. A parts book will show that the 4000 used the same rear end as the late 4020. The only internal differences in transmission was the 4000 did not have a reverse synchronizer on the reverse pinion gear. The 4000 can be updated with a reverse synchronizer with 4020 parts if someone wanted to do that. As correctly already stated the 4000 final drive had a lighter axle shaft than a 4020 but again was not in any way used on any 3020. The 4000 did have the lighter three point hitch arm like a 3020 and they may be the same. Not to argue with you or anybody else but a part catalog tells the truth to this often misunderstood subject. Where allot of this misunderstanding came from was the way Deere marketed the 4000 tractor. It was marketed to be a super 3020 and really it was nothing more than a low cost 4020. I really think Deere didn't want the general public to know just how cheap they could build a 4020 and spoil the market on them. No disrespect intended, DW

WTW ,I stand corrected I guess the 3/1/4 axles made me think it was basically lighter. Not an expert but have had several 4000s and think they are unique.Hope to not offend just trying to give an answer that I [THOUGHT]was correct. Thanks for giving the correct answer.

The 4000 had a different planetary carrier than the 4020
R82916 PLANET PINION CARRIER 1 (SUB FOR R42901)
R45842 PLANET PINION CARRIER 1 (A) (NLA)
R33004 PINION 3
(A) 4000 SERIES

R45842 doesn't show up in the 3020 parts cat # 1715 as this is the 3020 planetary carrier

R69445 PLANET PINION CARRIER 1 (SUB FOR R42900 OR R52330)
R33032 PINION 3

Jim,
Yes the 4000 planetary carrier and rear axle final drive assembly is unique to the 4000 only. As I said before no 3020 parts in it. The carrier "casting" number you are refering to is just that,a casting number. The raw casting that the 4000 carrier is made from is a coommon casting that the 3020 may have also used but is not the same part because they are machined different. That is why you may not have found the comonality (part number) in the 3020 parts book. The 4000 carrier, different from the 30 and 4020 carrier, carriers the R33004 4020 pinion gear set to match the 4020 size diameter ring gear that is part of the unique 4000 final drive casting. The ring gear is a 4020 part but is part of the unique 4000 final drive casting. The reason the final drive casting is different is because it is machined to take the smaller bearings for the unique 4000 size axle. This unique carrier carries the 4020 planet pinions and has the same center axle spline as used in the 4000, 4010, 3020, and 4030 axle shaft used, even though every model had its own unique axle shaft. I have studied these parts very close when building lighter components for pulling tractors. The final drive "assembly" is the most unique part of a 4000 series tractor compared to to any other model. They are rare and about impossible to find used. DW
