4010 Block drain cock

I have a JD 4010 diesel that I want to put a block heater in. Is the drain cock in the block brass or steel and how would you suggest that I remove it. There is not a soft plug in this model.I don't know if it has ever been out.

The drain valve is brass, if it has a pipe plug in the block it is steel. To get the drain valve out, you break off the "wing nut" and use a 6 point socket.
