i have the opertunity to by a 1962 4010 for $500 the issue is that the owner states that the engine blow and needs to be compleatly replaced i have know clue wetherthat is true or if it just through a rod or somthing but what i am wondering is how much is a new engine going to cost me and is this worth it.

A dead tractor can hide lots of problems and lots of owners are not very attentive while such a tractor ran. Best case scenario value-wise for a 4010 with a
replacement engine is around 7,000 dollars. If the rear tires are very poor then figure around 1,500 dollars per tire for a quality tire replacement. A take out engine from
a combine should run around 3,000 to 3,500 dollars. Not a lot of room dollar wise if you find other issues with that tractor even at 500 dollars to start.

If the new engine route does not pencil out for you, another way to look at this opportunity is parting the tractor out. You are not going to make $200 an hour
doing it, but as just a quick for instance, one good rear fender can fetch $500. You may be surprised what the other tin parts will bring. That said, the current
owner may know full well the 4010 has few good salvagable parts on it, hence the $500 price.

Don't waste your time and money on a 3010 or 4010,,they have PTO issues that will not stay fixed.

If you split them and make them 540 only?

I get Tim's frustration and no doubt he gets to hear from people who are in a foul mood when they have a PTO issue. We have had a 4010 on this farm since new and
only once had an issue which was caused by me being in a hurry. Use a (2) lock tab that has 2 holes where the ears can beat bent back to hold the cap screws. If you
have to use a blacksmith hammer to get the female yoke onto the tractor shaft it will be too stiff to telescope properly and you will break those bolts. If straight then
clean and lubricate or if twisted then replace. I worked for Central Tractor years ago and they had a new replacement shaft for the 540 drive on IH 706-1066 tractors.
Central Tractor never offered a new OEM replacement part if it could not be sold by the 100's so JD is not the only tractor that is not perfect in that respect. We ran wire
balers, 2 row chopper, and a flail type manure spreader here with dad not sparing the whip so if he could not break it then it can't be too horrendous.
