Installed electronic ignition about 2 months ago. Replaced plugs at same time. Run like a dream. The other day ran fine, then spit and sputtered a bit and died. No fire coming out of coil. Replaced coil, same result. Have 12 volts on positive side of coil when key is turned on.

HOPEFULLY you saved the breaker points and associated parts when you put in the (delicate) EI?

Put the points back in and hopefully it will start and run and you can continue on with what you were doing when the ''upgrade'' failed.

As a side note, you wrote ''Have 12 volts on positive side of coil when key is turned on.''

You must have converted it to (-) ground when you installed the EI?

I am not a Deere guy but I seem to have some memory of some of those having problems with the oil pump drive gear stripping. I believe the distributor is driven by the same gear. So check if the distributor is turning. Sorry if I am way off base.

I had the exact same thing happen on a 2510 a few years ago. I finally removed the EI and went back to points. It fired right up and is still going.

Sounds like the EI unit may have died or else its a simple wiring or connection that went bad??? Assuming all else is okay and distributor shaft is rotating as engine cranked...

With Ignition ON you should always have voltage on the coils high input FROM IGN SWITCH. However over on the low output side TO COIL as engine is slowly rotated a test lamp would flash ON (elec switch or old points were open) and OFF (elec switch or old points closed) SHES NEVER GONAN FIRE UNTIL THAT HAPPENS regardless if points or elec switch is used.

Just as if points were used when an engine is just sitting there not running and ign on there would be near zero volts (test lamp off no voltage) on the coils low output to dist terminal. Soooooooooo its what happens on the coils low output to dist terminal as engine is cranked that matters and tells you if the switch is working or not ???????????? TRY A TEST LAMP ON COILS LOW OUTPUT TO DIST SEE WHAT HAPPENS AS ENGINE IS CRANKED

Have you looked in the dist to insure the magnet assembly is tight down on where the dis cam lobes were and wiring to the pickup is in place and the shaft rotates as engine is cranked????

Just wanted to say Thanks for all the info. Found a bad wire which toasted the Electronic Ign. Put the points back in, started right up. Thanks again everyone.
