4010 Hydraulic pump problem

I have 1961 4010 diesel. I have replaced my hydraulic pump twice in the last 2 years. I purchased the 1st from john deere it was an aftermarket made in turkey didn't last a year they would not warranty it. I just brought a reman from here in the states and it has not lasted 12 hours and started leaking out of the seal of the input shaft. Each time I replaced the pump I drained the oil and put new Hy-guard and replaced the filter and drained the oil completely out. What am I doing wrong a $1,000.00 each time is getting expensive.

does your pump have the "leak off" line going from the pump seal area back to the rear transmission housing ? Not sure all had this ? You may want to add one ,but if you have one it may be plugged up and letting oil pressure build up at the seal blowing it out.
Have you also cleaned the sump screen in the tranny ?

It is old enough that it does not have a leak off line going to the transmission. It seems to have enough pressure like the original. Were is the trans screen? is it near the filter? Why did the original last from 1961 till 2017.

You need to add the leak off line. I had a shop years ago that would drill the housings and add the fitting to 3010 and 4010's that did not have one. It was a design issue and you were just lucky it lasted as many years as it did. It was a problem even during 4010 production that was addressed when the 4020 came out. Do you still have the old style hyd coupler system that that uses two metal plates? I would also update to the 4020 style with rubber bushings and two coupler halves. For the pump drain you will need a fitting or two back at the trans. case as well. Tom

As I recall, the screen is a long cylinder, cross ways at the bottom of the housing, behind a plug. I don't remember which side the plug is on.

You need to jump to the JD forum, and get Tim S involved. Then you're going right to the top, as there is no one more qualified than him on these issues.

Interesting. My 2520 came with a leak off line, but with the miserable little pump. I put a pump in it out of a 4010, with no leak off line, and have run it for years since.

I don't know the why ? other than maybe the original pump was designed different inside and the replacements are designed to use the leak off line ?

Location of sump screen is shown in photo below. Have you checked/set stand-by pressure(2250 psi) each time pump was installed? If pump is nearly new why not disassemble pump & install a new seal?

My Replacement pump that I have currently in the tractor does not have the port for that but the replacement from john deere did have that. I could drill and tap a that part of the pump. I am tool and die maker.

My 2510 had that same little poor pump. I put a 3020 or 4020 pump in. If the pump is perfect there is no need for the seal drain but with 50 years of use very few are anymore. Funny thing about the little pump is that Dad had a 2510 with one that would out lift and faster than the bigger pump in my 3010 or 3020. All three were with 46A loaders. I tell people to use the little pump untill it causes problems or leaks then update to the eight piston pump. Tom

When I got this 2520 I assumed the pump issue was history. Boy, did I get fooled! Apparently JD had 4 piston pumps to get rid of. My 2520, being first year production, got one.

We had two 2510's around here. One pump messed up early on, and was replaced with the recommended 8 piston pump, which, as I recall, was smaller than a 4020 pump. My cousin babied the other 2510 along on the original pump because he didn't like the way the bigger pump worked the engine. Sometimes it took time and fooling to get that small pump to wake up, but it was in that tractor all the years it was here.

The original outer shaft seal was a better/ higher pressure seal than the ones used with the leak off line. Last time I checkd you could still get the old style seal from Deere. I have drilled several pumps over the years and added the leak off line.

What went bad on the Deere reman pump? I would add the leak off line if you can do it. The seal does not bottom out in the housing but just far enough to install the snap ring. I fixed one last summer where the customer bought a reman pump and it would leak occasionally from the shaft. Found they had driven the seal in all the way blocking the port to the leak off line. New seal installed properly and no more leaks.

Screen is on the lower left. In front of were the 3 point tug arm connects. About a inch and a half in diameter. Needs a 1/2 inch square drive to remove. It is near the drain plug if I remember correctly.
