4010 John Deere Starting

I posted a week or so ago that I had rebuilt my 4010 diesel engine. I decided to check the timing again on the injector pump. It was timed at about 10 degrees after TDC. With some difficulty, I rotated the pump until the lined with aligned. It now starts harder than before - always requires a spray of ether at the air cleaner. It just doesn"t make sense to me unless the pump is out of whack and the mark is wrong. It can"t start worse at TDC than it does at 10 degrees after TDC.

The camshaft and oil pump were replaced by the dealer right before I bought the tractor. Probably 10 to 15 hours on all new parts. I don"t know if they were installed correctly.

Camshaft, gears and oil pump were all replaced by the dealer immediately before I bought the tractor. Gears have maybe 10 to 15 hours of use.

The 4010 -3010 pumps were timed at 14* and 10* respectively . Then , WHEN THE SPEED ADVANCE was installed the timing was changed to 12* and 8* so so the 10* you found wasnt that far off. Remember the timing is at THE END OF INJECTION.

My injection pump is from a 4020 so it has the built in advance. The John Deere service manual says to rotate the engine to TDC and the rotate the pump so that the lines line up. The flywheel has a 14 TDC marked on it But I can"t even see the line when the engine is in that position. I must be doing something wrong. Remember the 10 degrees I started with was 10 after top dead center - not before.
