4010 LP question

Tim S do you or any one else know if there is a gear drive starter or any other starter that will fit on a 4010, LP that will spin the engine faster than the original starter? why will a diesel engine spin so much faster than my LP? I know the starter is larger on the diesel. I have the same batteries on the LP that I have on the diesel and the LP turns over at half the speed or less. I have owned this tractor for over 30 years and the starter has been overhauled at least 3 times.I have put 2 kits in the vaporizer during this time also.It now has electronic ign,new plugs, wires and coil.motor needs overhauled uses a little oil and low on compression on a couple of cylinders.this thing is almost impossible to start when temp is below 50 degrees.it was not always that way. I am thinking of installing a diesel engine instead of overhauling this engine. I know you have the information on which engine out of a combine will work and I guess I need to find out which one will work the best. there are farm sales in my area that sells 6600 and 7700 combines ever now and then. thanks for any help you could give me on the starting issue until I decide on a over haul or engine change.

Your diesel is likely still 24 volts.

I put a starter off of a 3020 diesel that was converted to 12 volts on our 4020 gas. Had to swap out the starter drive. I did this mainly because I had it laying around. The original gas starter quit and upon inspection it was full of rust. I don't know how it worked so good for so long ?

have you tried turning steering wheel back and forth at the same time you are starting it, this will releave pressure and will start a lot faster. If this works you need to have your pressure releaf value replaced.

There's no pressure relief valve that one can replace on a closed center hyd system to aid ease of starting engine. Difficult starting is caused from hyd functions internal leaks. One can install and use a "destroking screw"(parts key #6) which when applied stops hyd pump from pumping oil.

LP gas does not vaporize as well when the temperature is around zero degrees. Years ago when we had our 4010 LPgas tractor it had a push button in the regulator, a person could push this to add more gas to the intake, for easier starts in very cold weather. I do not recall that it spun over slowly or slower than any other tractor we had, and it always started in below zero weather.

I have helped some buy getting a 1000 cold cranking amp
battery and mounting it right by the starter. Get the shortest
and biggest cables you can get. It is not factory but it has
worked for me several times. Rocking the steering wheel back
and forth helps a lot. Cranking only on vapor also helps it start good when it is cold. I have had some that was tougher than others to crank but they will crank when it is cold.

Has somebody swapped out the original LP starter ? big difference in the two . I used to install two diesel batteries hooked up for twelve volt . Make sure you don"t have a hydraulic problem. That front pump takes abt 25 hp when pumping at rated pressure and speed , so you can see it can put quite a load on the starter. That 4010 should have a destroke screw on it . crank it down to see if it makes a big difference ,if it does you have a hyd. problem.

thanks for the replies.
I have a new hydraulic pump without the destroker on it. I will install a manual destroker.I do not know if the starter is original to the tractor or not.I have 2 900 cca batteries on it now, but it still cranks slow. The starting problem got worse after I installed the last vaporizer kit. went by the instructions on the internal valve settings which were different than the original.
