4010 starting

just bought a 4010 diesel put in batteries and nothing wanted to know if tractor is positive ground or not still has generator

If it's gas it's positive ground.
If it's diesel you shouldn't have asked.

A Diesel with a generator means it's still 24 volt..I would change that to 12 volt ASAP

I hope you have not fired something already. It has a 24 volt starting circuit. You either need to convert it to 12 volt or get a wiring diagram and get the batteries hooked up correctly.

I also HIGHLY recommend changing to 12 Volt system but if still 24 volt system then the batteries should attached as in the schematic. There is a lot of 4010 electrical information at this site. http://www.geocities.com/gwece/deere/

If she's a 24 volt system, the starter and Generator are two wire 24 volt devices that are floating and electrically isolated from frame ground, UNLIKE ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL two cylinder 6 or 12 volt Deeres that did indeed have the Positive battery post attached to frame ground (therefore called POS grounded) with a cable, so its technically incorrect to say its POS GROUND, ITS FLOATING AND NOT ELECTRICALLY FRAME GROUNDED. The 24 volt starter and generator field windings, armature and brushes have no electrical connection to frame ground. If you were to attach either (+ or -) of those big outer 24 volt cables to frame ground OUCH that would create a dead short across the battery and blow or burn up the little jumper wire in the center (where two batteries are wired together and with a jumper wire to frame ground to achieve the A & B 12 volt circuit feeds up to the light switch, one 12 volt POS Ground the other 12 volt NEG ground FOR THE 12 VOLT CIRCUITS SUCH AS LIGHTS AND GAUGES NOTTTTTTTTTT THE 24 VOLTS HOWEVER ITS FLOATING AND NOTTTTT FRAME GROUNDED). Also on the 12 volt circuit portion, where the two batteries join in the middle, via the jumper wire to frame ground, one battery has its POS connected to frame ground while the other battery has its NEG connected to frame ground. The two A and B 12 volt feeds are therefore BOTH Pos (one feed) and Neg (other feed) frame grounded.

DONT FRAME GROUND EITHER of those big outer 24 volt cables!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When the starter relay or VR cutout relays are closed, that 24 volts is then applied across the starter or genny brushes (so starter turns or genny gens) but again NEVER TO FRAME GROUND

You may want to also check that center connection jumper wire to frame ground while you're troubleshooting. Are all the cables well attached?? I take it the starter solenoid isn't engaging or clicking???

If original each battery was grounded to the top of the tran. The
RH battery was negative ground. The LH battery was positive
ground. If wiring was updated it has a crossover cable as Tx

What you state is true but it would surprise me to find a tractor that hadn't been converted to the better system with the cable joining both batteries in lieu of the 2 mesh type battery cables.
