401C shift pattern

Hi folks,
I have a Deere 401C and I have a question about the shift pattern for the range stick (the one on the left). I did some googling, and what info I found suggests that the stick is simply high and low. Forward for low and back for high. But my machine, I swear there are 3 detents. 3 gear positions, on that left stick. I attached a picture of what my gearbox feels like. It's also a shuttle shift, so I don't know why there would be a reverse on the stick. I'm confused.

As buickanddeere asked: Do you have the Operator's Manual? It is a much better source of info for what you want than just googling. You can download and save a free copy at this link: JD Construction and Forestry Bookstore. OMT72114 is the current publication number for the 401C Operator's manual at the bookstore.

On that home page type OMT72114 in the center (Search Term) box, then click search. It should take you to that manual. There are options for purchase there. Clicking the yellow download box will download a free pdf copy to your device which you can save and print like any pdf document.

Here is some of what pages 9 and 10 of that Operator's Manual show.

Thank you so much! I didn't even know that site was there. The "extra" position is C, which is Park, which would explain my core issue, which was, why did I have a gear position that didn't make me move? Much appreciated!

Your shift pattern should be like the one on the left in the gear shift pattern picture. I have a 1520 with a shuttle, which is the ag. version of your tractor and it is like the one on the left, if you don't put in the park detent in will roll if you don't leave the bucket down.

What's really odd is that I can find the manual with my iphone, but when I try to use my regular computer, it gives me 404 not found, no matter what I search for. It doesn't seem to matter if I sign up for an account or not. Doesn't matter if I use Mozilla or Edge either. The important thing is, I was able to get the book and email it to myself. That worked great. Thanks again!

I can't help you with that it works fine on my computer with Edge.
