4020 24 volt conversion

Need Help!!!!!
Did a 24 volt to 12 volt conversion, starter and alternator, and now the fuel gauge dont work. Changed dash unit from a pos. ground to neg. ground, all that did was changed the pointer from pegged at full to pegged at empty. Tried a new gauge, same result. Done a bench test on gauge. Connected pos. on gauge to pos. on battery and neg. to neg. Using a test light as a resisted ground on sender terminal of gauge, got no result. Found that by powering test light from bat. Pos. and connecting to Sender terminal, the gauge would respond to that input. What next???? Thanks

Just did this conversion on a 4020 last winter and had the same problem, only I blew the gauge by having a positive ground gauge and when it changed to neg ground it blew. The gauge you have is the wrong one or it is blown. You have to get a 12 volt neg ground gauge and it should work if you wired the system correctly.

Also make sure you connected all the wires togeather at the starter and hooked them to the positive side to get 12 volts of neg ground to the dash.

The back of the gauge should say 12 neg if it is the right one. Deere makes the gauges pos ground and neg ground so it is easy to mix them up.

You have to replace the sender with one that matches the gauge.

Some of these systems used a sender that showed LOW resistance when the tank was EMPTY, and some used a sender that showed LOW resistance when the tank was FULL.

You have a mis-match between the gauge and sender, so it's essentially telling the gauge the tank is full when it is empty, and empty when it is full.
