4020 block heater element replace

I am pretty sure that either the cord or the element has failed on my coolant tank heater. It is the JD version so going to stop by and buy a new element. I have never replaced this before, so I am wondering if there is a way to replace the element without draining the coolant? Am I ok to try and clamp off the hoses while I replace? Manuals don't have much description. Thanks

I have used vise grips on the hoses to the heater.

If the hoses are in good/soft condition SURE you could clamp them to stop the loss of coolant and replace the element, heck they even make tools to clamp the hoses with less chance of damaging them.

But if they are getting on in age it might be a good time to simply drain the coolant, replace the element, and the hoses as preventive maintenance.
