4020 clicking pto.

I just replaced pto brake on my 65 4020 powershift and the o rings and gaskets. The pto turn on and off great. Today when I made my first round bale and started to tie the pto started a clicking noise. At idle its about 2 clicks a second any ideas? Pto still works like it should.

Is hyd oil level at the full mark?

Cracked gear tooth in PTO drive train . Check gears on the rear as they are easiest to get to . Then It will require a double split to get to the front gears and shafts . Sorry ,Turn the PTO shaft by hand and you will feel a broken tooth or a missing one .

It could be the brake ticking at the anchor pin,,"maybe" as it wears a bit it will stop, but now it could be that the new lining of the brake is just a bit close to the gear it stops against. I just replace a 65 4020 POWER shift PTO brake, and before I split it there was a strong clicking going on in that area, I was thinking an idler bearing was bad, but the anchor pin was sheared and the noise was from the brake spinning in the housing..

You could prove my thought by removing the PTO brake line on the side of the clutch housing and hitting it with some air pressure to see if it stops ticking, if it don't then Don's theory is closer...

It start clicking when I activated a the twine arm (JD 510 baler) the inching pedal and was shifting gears. I did not turn off the pto.

Where exactly is the "clicking" noise?

A couple of years ago I had a clicking noise on the PTO on my 1965 JD4020 at the rear of the tractor. I pulled the 540 PTO out and replaced the carrier bearing and it rectified the problem. Took about 20 minutes...

you where on the right track I let it set tell today and went and started it again and it. Bearly was clicking and went away. The oil level was fine it must of been cavitating at the pump from air in one of the lines/ functions. Thanks so much.
