4020 clutch noise

My 1965 4020D w/syncro-range makes a strange growling noise- SOMETIMES- as I engage the transmission clutch but only if the PTO is disengaged. If the PTO is running, no noise. The transmission clutch doesn't slip and there is no noise once the clutch is engaged. The PTO clutch did slip once last summer when using the round baler, and got hot enough to smell some, but after a bit of adjustment on the rod under the dash, it doesn't slip anymore. The throw out bearing seems smooth and the PTO engagement bearing is also. I wonder if getting the PTO clutch hot warped a pressure plate and that's what is making the noise. There are no metal or clutch disc shavings when the inspection plate is removed and everything that is visible under there looks OK. Any ideas as to what I'll find?

I need to replace the rear main seal so will put in a new clutch at that time but was hoping to put it off until later in the summer.

It sounds like a release bearing noise,,maybe you can drop the lower cover and get it to take some grease there is a zerk on the bearing holder for the trans clutch and one behind the clutch pedal for the PTO.
