4020 clutch

How big of a job is it to fix the rear main seal in a 4020 that is leaking oil on the clutch? I was wondering in shop hrs. I am looking at one that has leaked bad enough it wont move. It is a 70 model with about 8k hrs. on. Real good tin work. TIA

Should be able to do that in 12 hrs. Pretty sure u have a clutch problem also. U will need one anyhow once its oil soaked.

Be sure to change the PTO engagement plunger packings while you have it split. Those seem to put more oil on the clutch than a leaking rear crank seal. In my shop that entire job would be about 4 -5 hrs. The input shaft seal should also be replaced while you're there, also.

If it won't move you have issues WAY beyond an oil seal leak.

There's four areas where engine or transmission oil can leak into the clutch housing.

In addition to stopping the oil leak, the clutch assembly needs to be repaired/rebuilt, or replaced with a re-man unit and the flywheel will likely need to be resurfaced, or replaced if worn beyond reconditioning ''specs''.

Any speculation that this can be done in a few hours is just that, SPECULATION.

If the transmission input seal needs to be replaced or the splines or pilot area are worn, another split is required to replace that seal and/or shaft.

If you are going to have clutch parts resurfaced and replace the lined plates taking that all apart, putting it together and setting the 6 fingers will take longer than the ''split'' in addition to time and mileage to the machine shop.

Also, it takes time to clean and tidy everything up before going back together.

The bottom line is that do do a quality job of this it is going to take a LOT longer than ''book time'' and more $$$ in parts than you may be expecting.

Strictly speaking your exact question 6 to 8 hours but in reality...
200 bucks to machine flywheel.
8 hrs labor remove and install clutch and flywheel. It will shoot most of a day and thats probably what would be reasonable.
Clutch condition is the wild card but lets say 1400 estimate for seals facings and either the shop labor to rebuild it with new springs or a new pressure plate assembly doesnt really matter unless your doing it yourself you have about the same either way might as well be new. If you are doing it yourself you can rebuild it for 400 bucks or so for all new springs. Light touch of the pressure plate maybe at the machine shop but dont overdo it if it looks decent dont touch it.
Unfortunately your 50 dollar oil seal is the last thing in there and the likelihood of anybody washing the oil off everything and not suggesting the 2500-3000 bucks its gonna cost to fix it right is slim to non.

I just worked on a 72 4020 last week with the same issue,,replaced the PTO operating pistons and seal, rear main seal clutch disc only the flywheel and pressure plate was good $375 parts $950 labor total was $1375

Make sure and check the pistons after done with the pto engaged. If the valve is not adjusted properly you will be doing this again shortly. With it done, you should NOT see the pistons move while the pto in engaged.
